From the now familiar confines of the 4th and B in downtown San Diego, Bobby D. Presents with Coors Light and Top Shelf Promotions presented “Summer Showdown”, an action packed five bout fight card. 800+ rabid fans enjoyed a night of punches, dances and surprises. To begin the night, Bobby DePhilippis and company payed special tribute to our fallen heroes on this the seventh anniversary of the tragic events of September 11th. After a respectful rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner”, the action began. In the main event, former IBF 105 lbs. champion Roberto “Mako” Leyva took on local spoiler “Benji” Garcia in a six round flyweight main event.

It did not take the shorter Garcia long to begin to land a multitude of punches on the southpaw Leyva with the majority landing to the body of the former champion. Near the end of the first, Leyva made a quick statement with a quick left to the mid section and the a left flush to the face of Garcia. Although the smaller man by a number of inches and a couple of pounds, Garcia seemed the bigger man as he punched Leyva to the ropes and continued to attack the body and head. Leyva seemed somewhat out of his element as he waited to counter punch but was not able to time the oncoming “Benji”. Garcia finished off the round by landing a strong right hook to the jaw of “Mako”.

A much busier Leyva was seen in the third as he tried to establish his fight with a southpaw jab which he used as a range finder in hopes of landing a cross left. Leyva began to take control of the round with a more steady attack lead by the jab and coupled with a either a straight left to the mid section or head of Garcia. Leyva’s experience began to show as he began to dictate the pace of the bout. Leyva began the fourth with a stiff left hand that sent Garcia to his back foot but “Benji” came right back and chased Leyva against the ropes and landing a combination that included both hooks to the body and head. At the end of the round, the story of the bout began to unfold as Garcia controlled the action on the inside while Leyva was content in attacking from the outside searching for the right opening to unleash the straight left.

the water and sweat on either fighter’s head began to spray as both warriors began to land power punches on their rival’s head. Garcia took the initiative as he crowded Leyva against the ropes and landed some hard uppercuts that brought on the cheers from the assembled crowd. Garcia began to make Leyva uncomfortable by landing right from all directions and forms, from uppercuts, straights and the occasional overhand. With the bout’s outcome for him seemingly riding on the final round, Leyva came out of his corner with a flurry of punches looking for a knockout. Garcia began to either to hold to break the rhythm of Leyva’s attack or move on the perimeter of the ring to evade Leyva’s attack. Leyva pressured until the final bell and had no alternative but to wait for the judges decision.

In somewhat of an upset, judge Alejandro Rochin scored it 58-56 while Jerry Cantu had it 59-55. Fritz Werner turned in a 60-54 score card, all for the San Diego native “Benji” Garcia. Fightnews scored it 58-57 for Garcia. With the win, Garcia bags the biggest name of his career and goes to 13-10, 1KO while Leyva leaves the ring disappointed with a 25-8-1, 20KO.

“I felt comfortable and strong at this weight and with the support of my people”, Garcia stated minutes after the bout. “I was inactive for seven months and it feels good to come back with a win. It’s hard to describe what I feel after beating an ex world champion. I want to give Sergio Espinoza that rematch he has been asking for.”

In the semi main event, San Marcos, CA’s Aaron Garcia (9-1, 2KO) soundly defeated Gabe Garcia (4-4-1, 1KO) of Phoenix, AZ, in a scheduled six round in the featherweight division in a battle of Garcias. In the first round, top amateur standout Aaron used a quick waist to slip away from the wide left and right hooks from his opponent. Although missing with many of his punches, Gabe Garcia did not lose faith as he swithced from orthodox to southpaw and back as he pressured Aaron around the ring. Aaron Garcia began to attack the body with fervor in the second stanza of the bout in hopes of slowing down the high punch output of his opponent. Midway thru the round, Aaron succeeded in pushing Gabe against the rings and continue to concentrate on the mid section while Gabe kept trying to land a power punch with a sporadic jab thrown in for good measure.

At the onset of the third, the shorter Aaron Garcia continued with his strategy of continuous body shots while Gabe matched his activity of the first round, this time putting together combinations succeeding with a stern right uppercut. Near the end of the round , the actual slowed as the Arizona native got on his bike and moved away from the body shots that seemed to make an effect displayed from his open mouth. The fourth round brought Aaron meeting his oppoenent with a hard right hook to the mouth of the stomach of Gabe. By the middle of the round, both fighters began to sporadically exchange punches with Aaron getting the best of the exchanges as he snapped his rival’s head back with stiff right crosses. Although Gabe Garcia seemed to begin to lose steam, he was right there with Aaron as they moved around the ring at a quick pace.

In the fifth, Aaron became a power puncher as he landed a devastating left hook to the stomach of Gabe which took out the wind of his rival’s sails. With his opponent slowing, Aaron began to unload on the body of Gabe but his opponent was able to survive the round. to start off the sixth and final round, both Garcias exchanged body shots along the ropes with Aaron’s creating the most damage on his almost spent opponent. With the final roound’s ticking, Aaron Garcia began to land to the head of Gabe who began to crowd Aaron so as not to be at the end of Aaron’s punches. Near the end of round, Gabe Garcia seemed on his way to the canvas from a cumulation of punches but was able to drag his opponent and himself to their knees. After the scores were read, Aaron Garcia walked away the winner with scores of 60-54 twice and 59-55.
