Unbeaten WBO jr flyweight champion Ivan ‘Iron Boy’ Calderon (32-0, 6 KOs) won a seven round technical decision over former champion Hugo Cazares (26-6-1, 19 KOs) on Saturday night at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Cazares was looking for the knock out while Calderon boxed beautifully and was in command until an unintentional head butt in round seven-left the “Iron Boy” with a nasty gash on his forehead 1:58 into the round. Scores were 67-66, 68-65, and 68-65.

Unified WBC/WBA super flyweight world champion Cristian Mijares (35-3-2, 15 KOs) scored a third round TKO over Chatchai Sasakul (64-4, 39 KOs) to retain his belts on Saturday night at the Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico. Mijares was in command the entire way, dropping the 38-year-old former WBC flyweight champion at the end of round two and again at 1:25 of the third stanza. Sasakul beat the count but was unable to continue.
Nikolai Valuev (49-1, 34 KOs) reclaimed the vacant WBA heavyweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over fellow former titleholder John Ruiz (43-9-1, 29 KOs) on Saturday night at the Max Schmeling Halle in Berlin, Germany. The seven-foot Valuev piled up points with his much-improved long jab throughout the fight. Ruiz was occasionally able to get inside and was quite willing to trade power shots with the “Russian Giant,” Ruiz had his best rounds late after Valuev slowed down, but it was Valuev who prevailed by scores of 116-111, 116-113 and 114-113.
