Top Ranks hates Victor Ortiz

Kevin Lole from yahoo sports wrote an interesting article enjoy.
Victor Ortiz is a charming young man with a gregarious personality and a brilliant smile. He also happens to be one of the most gifted boxers in the world.
Shelly Finkel, one of Ortiz’ co-managers, describes a story about him that would warm even the most hard-hearted person. Finkel speaks of a kid who grew up in poverty and who, at 21, has accepted the responsibility for the care of his brother.
That boxing promoters would battle over his rights is hardly surprising. He has a chance to become one of boxing’s biggest stars in the next five years.
But Ortiz’ decision to file bankruptcy last year and, further, as part of the bankruptcy to void his promotional agreement with Top Rank, has not only left bitter feelings on all sides, but at least raises the question of whether a promoter will ever be willing to invest in the development of a young fighter again.
JEAN CLAUDE BOUTTIER; if It Wasn’t For Monzon

Ludovic Proto, Christian Suares et Jean-Claude Bouttier.
To me Jean Claude Bouttier was one of the best fighters of a great era who never won a world title. He joins Pierre Fourrie, Yaqui Lopez, Bennie Briscoe, Hedgemon Lewis, Ernie ” Red ” Lopez and Ray Lampkin who were boxers fighting in the wrong place at the wrong time. Even some boxers who held a fragment of a title never got the recognition they deserved because of other dominant champions. Men like Rodrigo Valdez, Esteban DeJesus and Howard Winstone.
Bouttier was probably the most popular French fighter since the beloved Marcel Cerdan. He became a professional in 1965 and by 1969 he was beginning to meet some of the better middleweights in the world. He lost two decisions to the under rated Juarez DeLima and drew with countryman Max Cohen.

Caught on Camera: Some familiar faces!
The Quiet Cannon in Montebello, California was the place to be last Friday night as All Star Boxing held their very first show of the year. It was a chance to catch up after the holidays with a lot of familiar faces who came out to watch seven bouts of action. The show was promoted by Ed Holmes and Pete Hironaka and in this smaller venue any seat offered a great view.
Whether it’s at large Vegas arenas or smaller club fights, the usual suspect show up because we all love boxing. It was a fun, lively night with a big surprise guest: Grammy-nominated singer Brian McKnight sang the national anthem and kept the sell-out crowd on their feet.
This was also the perfect opportunity to capture these images of the night and chat with some of the Los Angeles locals that frequent the fight scene.

They come to the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California, with a combined record of 50-1 with 30 knockouts, so it’s safe to say that when the “New Blood” of boxing “Juan Carlos Burgos, Patrick Lopez, Mauricio Herrera, and Hector Serrano ” lace up their gloves on Friday, February 27th, the future of the sport is in fine hands.
“New Blood III”, a six-bout card of hard-hitting professional boxing action presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions, will take place at the Doubletree Hotel Ontario, which is located at 222 N. Vineyard Avenue. For tickets, priced at $75, $45, and $30, please call 714-935-0900.
In the main event, rising featherweight star Juan Carlos “Mini” Burgos (20-0, 14 KOs) takes a step up when he battles Omar “Calilla” Lizarraga (16-6-1, 12 KOs) in a ten round battle for the vacant IBA featherweight crown. Tijuana’s Burgos, just 21 years old, has been drawing rave reviews for his exciting style and ring savvy. The 33-year old Lizarraga, a 13-year veteran who wants to make a statement against the youngster from his Tijuana hometown, will push him to the limit.
Jose Canseco vs. Danny Bonaduce

Former baseball player Jose Canseco, left, squares off with Danny Bonaduce during a celebrity-boxing match on Saturday, in Aston, Philadelphia
The one-time admittedly juiced Bash Brother had only warning-track power in the ring. He staggered former child star Danny Bonaduce with a couple of big blows in Saturday night’s three-round fight but failed to deliver the knockout punch, and the celebrity boxing match ended in a deflating majority draw.
”There’s no reason I should have done this well,” said Bonaduce, his nose bloodied. “Part of me says there’s a decent man right there that didn’t want to kill the little guy. I feel weird that we tied.”
The 6-foot-4 Canseco jolted the 5-6 Bonaduce a couple of times in Round 1 and a couple more in Round 3. Bonaduce, who played Danny Partridge on the “The Partridge Family,” never went down. Bonaduce predicted he would be knocked out, only to hang in there and land a few body blows on the hulking Canseco.
DOUG DeWITT; TRUE GRIT

I enjoy watching all different types of fighters. I appreciate the art and finesse of a clever boxer like Willie Pep. I enjoy the rock-em- sock-em style of a Joe Frazier. There were men with great jabs like Larry Holmes. I was dazzled by the hand speed of Sugar Ray Leonard and more recently by Joe Calzaghe. I was in awe of the power of a Earnie Shavers or Julian Jackson. I was in even more awe of men with the granite jaws who could absorb the power shots like George Chuvalo and Tex Cobb did.
These were just a handful of fighters I have the ultimate respect for. Overall I think my favorite trait in a boxer is bulldog tenacity. They may not be the best boxer or the hardest puncher and at times their chin may betray them. Still as long as they are standing their opponents better be prepared to fight. I guess gritty is best adjective I can use to describe this type of fighter. Doug DeWitt fit the bill.
