Once beaten Australian Vic Darchinyan is a solid favorite to defend his super flyweight title tomorrow night against seasoned former champion Jorge Arce. Darchinyan is coming off a very strong showing in which he stopped Christian Mijares. Arce lost a lopsided decision to Mijares in 2007. Since that time though he has won five straight. Let’s rewind to 2007. Nonito Donaire of the Philippines blasted Darchinyan out in five rounds. This loss should not be taken lightly. Donaire laid down the blueprint on how to defeat Darchinyan.

Arce is coming into this bout with a 51-4-1 record. He has scored 34 KO’s. On examining his record it is clear to see that he has met much better opposition than Darchinyan who has a 31-1-1 ledger. Twenty-five wins by stoppage Vic is very strong and aggressive. He is also a powerful hitter with a somewhat porous defense. The trick to beat Vic is to back him up. Coming forward he is a wrecking machine. Going backwards he is much less effective. Can Arce do it? He is the naturally smaller man but he is strong for his size. If he can effectively jab his way in and keep Darchinyan of balance, he may then be able to force his will on Vic.

For Arce to win he has to fight a “perfect” fight. With a banger like Darchinyan there is little room for error. BUT if Vic is taken out of his game he may self-destruct like he did against Donaire. One way or the other it should be an entertaining scrap.
