By Gabriel F. Cordero: Possibilities exist that the upcoming fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz could be for the WBA and/or WBO lightweight world titles. Those titles (along with the IBF version) became vacant after reigning champion Nate Campbell couldn’t make weight for Saturday’s bout against IBF mandatory Ali Funeka. Golden Boy Promotions has contacted both the WBA and WBO to explore options for sanctioning the February 28 clash in Houston. The WBA title was renounced by Campbell prior to the fight, but promoter Don King apparently patched things up with the WBA before Campbell’s problem at the scale. photo by Aaron Sprecher
