Calls illegal pads an “innocent mistake”
Former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito and his trainer Javier Capetillo had their licenses revoked at today’s California State Athletic Commission’s disciplinary hearing. Capetillo stated that he accidentally put illegal pads into Margarito’s hand wraps prior to his bout with Shane Mosley. “I committed a big mistake,” Capetillo said according to the LA Times. “I don’t want this young man to have problems. I’m here to cover any responsibility. I take full responsibility. I committed this innocent mistake.”

Earlier, CSAC Inspector Che Guevara testified that the pad inside Margarito’s hand wraps was “not hard as a rock, but firm and hard.” Inspector Mike Bray testified that there was “a white substance smeared across the pad, like a cast plaster.” The pads, confiscated by the commission before Margarito’s fight last month with Shane Mosley, are still being tested by the Commission. Margarito and Capetillo are currently on suspension pending the outcome of this case.

I too am a fan of Margarito and no matter what, I will always be his fan. I truly believe he didn’t know what was going on.
But this is what I say:
If Mosley didn’t have his license revoked after allegedly using steroids and having a history of using them, then why not do the same for Margarito and allow him to keep his license? His trainer himself said he takes all responsibility because Margarito didn’t know. Well then, why punish him?
Well I’m a huge Fan of Margarito too, but I think he knew what was going on, if there was cheating with the wraps he knew about it and he lied to us.
But then again, I think boxing and lots of other sports have people taking advantage of anything that is possible.
Even Mosley on that same ESPN segment when ask about Balco and what does Mosley has to say about that to the fans who want to know if Mosley is clean, he said ” I’m getting tested all the time, and I say to the fans you can test me anytime you want, you can test me anytime of the week because I know I’m clean, that’s just me, I’m a clean person, I live clean, I fight clean and that’s type of stu…….that’s just not me ”
Now, this to me is the same kinda talk Margarito did about his wraps, anyone that knows just a tinny bit about steroids in sports knows that they can be masked so they don’t show up in tests, that is how he did it before, that is why he didn’t get caught even when he testified he used them when he fought DLH, he got tested after that fight and showed up clean…. Now how is that possible??? well there you have it…
Mosley is a very smart person and a class act inside and outside the ring (aside from the steroids) and he would not be stupid and naive (no one in sports knowing what’s @ stake is) to let someone give him a cycle of pills or shots without know what it is, please… same as Margaro saying Capettilo does the wraps, I assume they are legal.
And to me illegal wraps with harden stuff in it looks worst and is probably more dangerous than anything in boxing.
One side of me wants to back Margarito but the other already lost faith and respect for him.
I agree. Margarito needs to not have any contact with his trainer, if Tony stays with Capetilo that is a known cheater, what does that say about tony?
really sad. I am a huge fan of Margarito.
Now this is sad, a very sad day for boxing.
If Margarito fights again in the US it would never be the same, this puts major question mark on all of the big wins.
When I saw the interview in ESPN I knew that he was going to say he knew nothing about it and “If” something was wrong was Capetillos fault,
I quote Margarito without translating: “Yo lo que quiero que sepan es de que, como yo voy a hacer trampa, o no yo sino Capetillo, vamos Capetillo es el que me venda” That right there made me doubt Margarito, because Capetillo and him are very close, Margarito has said Capetillo is like his a father to him, so it’s not just a another trainer, so if Capetillo put something on Margaritos gloves Margarito knew about it.
I was waiting to see what the evidence was, but this clearly tells it all.
I’m deeply disappointed in Margarito, here is someone who had nothing, had no connections like other boxers do, worked hard for many years and now throws it all away, including his fans.
It also makes you thing, what else don’t we know about this sport…
