Five-time world champion Johnny Tapia has been released from jail pending a court decision early next week. Tapia was in court but was able to avoid a possible one-year jail sentence under the habitual offender law, at least until Monday.

Tapia admitted to using cocaine six months ago after nearly dying from an overdose. Tapia’s legal team is asking for Judge Kenneth Martinez to send Tapia to a drug treatment center in southern New Mexico.

In April 2008, Tapia told everyone he would try avoiding another mistake when he was given a second chance to go to rehab, instead of jail.

Court documents show that Tapia told his probation officer that he used “one line of cocaine”. In the meantime, Tapia says he is coming out of retirement and today, signed a contract for two more fights. It appears the one fight Tapia can’t win is the fight against his own addiction.

  1. 2 more fights? I don’t care who they put him in with they are nuts! Why continue to parade Tapia around when the world knows he needs to work on his addictions for the rest of his life. Bad idea here and I bet like last time he won’t even show up or make weight.
