ROGER ROUSE
April 13, 2009
One of the top fighters in the light heavyweight division during the 60’s was Roger Rouse. Roger twice failed in gallant attempts at winning
the world championship. He also represented the Untied States as a middleweight in the 1956 Olympics at Melbourne, Australia. He was eliminated in the quarter final round. Roger turned professional in April of 1958 and went undefeated in his first thirteen bouts. He suffered his first defeat in 1960 to Babe Simmons. He was inactive in 1961 and in his only bout of 1962; he lost to Sid Carter.
Roger got his career back on track in 1963 with two wins over Frank Niblett. He also defeated Chuck Leslie and Sonny Miles. Dean Bogany stopped him in seven rounds. He opened 1964 with a loss to Hank Casey. He then rebounded with four straight wins including a one round kayo over Johnny Persol. In 1965 he stepped into the big time. He lost to Henry Hank and Eddie Cotton, but he stopped Cotton in a re-match. He went undefeated in 1966 scoring knockouts over Don Turner, Rudolph Bent, and Leslie Borden. He finished the year with a decision over Cotton.
Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Erik Morales
April 13, 2009
Just as Felipe Leon (MyBoxingFans Editor-in-Chief) predicted in his last In the Squared Circle (click here to read) current WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez more than likely will face three divisional champion Erik “Terrible” Morales of Tijuana, MX, in
the fall according to Esto.com.mx.
Marquez’s manager Nacho Beristain felt compelled to squash the rumors coming out of Venezuela that said newly crowned WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero was the next opponent for Marquez. Beristain stated that Marquez would reappear in September and that his next opponent will be Morales.
Beristain explained that Marquez is not interested in Valero since the Venezuelan is not in the plans of his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions.
According to Beristain, Juan Manuel is ready to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. but the negotiations for that bout have hit a stalemate because Mayweather was asking for Marquez to go up to welterweight which would be impossible for the Mexico City fighter. Juan Manuel was willing to go up to the junior welterweight limit of 140 lbs. but not more.
Experts Call for Valero-Marquez!
April 13, 2009
According to the web potal DominicanosHoy.com, a bout between the current WBO and WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and the newly crowned WBC champ Edwin Valero is an inevitability.
Valero was awarded the coveted green belt with an annihilation of the Columbian Antonio Pitalua in 49 seconds of the second round ten days ago in Austin, TX, as part of Golden Boy Promotions “Lightweight Lightning.”
Valero who is not familiar with the bitter taste of defeat in twenty five professional bouts, all of them ending by knockout and eighteen of them in the first round.
Valero turned professional as a super featherweight but after winning the crown decided to pursue greatness five pounds north in the 135 lbs.
division since he couldn’t find any suitable rivals at 130 pounds.
