bob-arumAccording to another report by PrimeraHora.com, promoter Bob Arum will present Miguel Cotto a list of six recognized trainers for the WBA champion to choose one to work his corner on the night of June 13th in his bout against IBF champion Joshua Clottey at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The Puerto Rican fighter is in the market for a new trainer after getting into an altercation with his former trainer and uncle Evangelista Cotto this past Wednesday afternoon in Caguas, Puerto Rico, Cotto’s hometown.

“It looks like Miguel made a decision regarding not working with his uncle anymore so I have gathered a list of six names so that Cotto can choose one for his next fight,” Arum said via telephone. “I want the person that is chosen to begin working with Cotto as soon as possible.”

For years it was rumoured that the relationship between Miguel and Evangelista Cotto was not the best although publicly they would refuse to admit it.

Arum mentioned that Cotto will be moving to Tampa, Florida, for the intense phase of his training for his next fight against Clottey.

Although Arum refused to share the list of potential trainers, he did state that Emmanuel Steward was not one of them.

“Emmanuel would be an excellent trainer but it would not be possible for him to work with Miguel because he is training Wladimir Klitschko for a fight that he will have a week later after Miguel’s. How is he going to train him, by phone?,” Arum joked.

It seems that Evangelista was not happy with the new training regimen that they were discussing for approximently half an hour. According to anonymous witnesses, Miguel assaulted his uncle first landing a series of punches which ironically his uncle taught him how to throw before other fighters in the gym intervened but not before Evangelista landing punches of his own that cut the nose of Cotto. Evangelista also suffered a cut to his nose and a black eye.

Arum lamented the situation especially since the parties involved are family but he didn’t discard the possibility of a reunion later down the line.

“It is sad because its family. Unfortunately, it happens. Once I was having lunch at a restaurant when I had to intervene in a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his father. This is not new but still unfortunate,” Arum concluded.
