Update: Miguel Cotto vs. Manny Pacquiao

Pacquiao sat at ringside and watched Cotto win a split decision over Joshua Clottey in New York’s Madison Square Garden. After seeing the thousands of Puerto Rican fans Cotto has, Pacquiao imminently told his promoter Bob Arum to make a deal with the WBO welterweight champion.
“We’re going to have to talk to the Cotto people,” said Arum during the Cotto-Clottey post fight. “He has a lot of options. I would like for him to fight Manny Pacquiao. That would be a tremendous fight and I hope we can get it done for November.”
There is no questions that the Pound-for-pound champ Pacquiao would make a killing in Pay-per-view buys but the one name Arum couldn’t avoid responding to was that of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Mayweather, whose return to the ring July 18th has now been postponed, is still viewed by many as the top fighter in the world despite a 19-month ring layoff and a fight with Pacquiao could be the highest grossing of all time but Bob Arum simply responded “its not happening.”
It’s no secret Bob Arum and Floyd Mayweather don’t get along but if Bob Arum could make this fight happen (Cotto vs. Pacquiao) I won’t compliant.
The question is who would win? Vote Now!

By they way it was only 2 tiimes he got stopped,

EXAMINERAUTHOR …..Well said.
Cotto was way too slow with Joshua Clottey who made a lot of mistakes.
Joshua had every opportunity in that figh and blew it. As far for a rematch we all know Cotto will not give him one, that Clottey doesn’t deserve.
Could we imagine what Pacquaio will do.

Pacman has a good chance of KOing Cotto. Cotto was too slow in his last fight [with Clottey]. Speed and power would surely work in Pacman’s favor against Cotto.

Luis their is only one inch of merit of what your talking about that makes any kind of sense. What’s the difference?, Manny was able two knocked out Ricky Hatton out cold a much more bigger man then Cotto so how do you figure? I believe Hatton walk around 200 pounds when he is not training and for Manny Pacquaio to be able to knock out such a bigger opponents that show the extend of his power, don’ t you think?…..too me that’s pretty impressive. Need not too say more, as Pacquaio moved up in many many different weight classes he was able too knock out heavier opponents with ease Cotto has fought in only 2 different weight classes, Can you tell me how many weight classes has Pacquaio fought in I think we all no the answer too that one my friend.
You have too understand something Luis….size doesn’t really mean nothing, its the will my friend. And we are only debating about a two differential weight class between the 2 fighters. Come on…… Wake up
Don’t get me wrong have much respect for Miguel Cotto, but Manny Pacquaio is going too destroy him, and I say by knock out, maybe not as earlier as Hatton but he will be stopped my friend.
Its all good over here I love having a good debate bring it on, my friend

Still wish it was Shane Mosley instead of Cotto, it would be more interesting too watch then Pacquaio and Cotto, highly unlikely any chance of that fight actually happen. Maybe Mosley might have to fight Andre Berto. It makes it more interesting all the time, this division so very intriguing, lots of option and fighter that can match up with one another.

you guys are all great,,i love reading your opinions about the cotto pacquio fight,,,surely, manny will beat the hell out of cotto…but freddy roach said manny should be intelligent cause cotto is a strong and intelligent fighter, but the surprise with cotto’s style of fighting lost when margarito beat him…but lets see, both guys are interesting fighters..they both have the power which is very unpredictable..

Hi! to all you guys. You have all the points.I wont be mentioning who will win with paquiao against cotto but i just like to share some few.
1. Cotto might win if he can hit Manny to big shots then followed by the finishing blow but if he cant do that then he’ll be the one to get KO.
2. I wont mentioned on paquiao speed hand, footwork, power, strategy, techniques coz it all there complete. You knew guys, with all those speed paquiao has, how much more with his eyes? it is more faster than his arms & foot thereby his reflection is so fast. With this you cant easily hit paquiao solidly. Therefore chances are cotto will be having a hard time in landing a hard shots.
3.Last thing, the moment you will hit by paquiao and he felt you staggered, barraged of accurate punches NON STOP surely will put you to rest.
Goodbye guys.

some of u hav it right on,it will be a great fight. the guy who thinks pacman will destroy cotto has to pull his head out of his ass. pacman has speed, cotto not as fast. But still fast enough, just ask shane. neither one has great head movment, they both will hav a problem defending the others attack.i think either one could ko the other.i dont think its a good idea for cotto to go down in weight,he should make pacman come up.I beilieve pacmans straight left could be a problem for cotto.if cotto can back manny up he could do some damage cuz he dosnt counter to good onthe run.it will be a tough fight for both fighters.Clottey is good but fights like scrub! hence the headbutt( no need for that) i also saw the elbow to the chin of cotto.if cotto wasnt half blind he would hav done more damage.as far as margarito goes u-all know damb well he cheated when does it take two weaks for swelling to go down.and remember even though he was getting hit with bricks margarito’s bitch ass still couldnt ko him cotto toke a knee. pacman can take stick to the body, can he take a stick to the face?lol.so he beat hatton so what! cotto could hav done the same thing.pacman has alot of bandwagon jumpers cuz he hot right now.i like him too but i still take cotto on this one. go! cotto

You’re right Brown, Cotto gets weaker on the later rounds of the fight which is very much the other way around for Manny. Manny gets stronger on later rounds of the fight. He still has his speed and power even up to round 12.
Cotto’s win will only take place on the earlier rounds but I don’t think he could catch Manny that early. Manny is a smart fighter, he’ll elude Cotto and will make him tired, Manny will then storm Cotto with barrage of punches.
Also, Cotto is not JMM that has the counter-punching prowess that will slow down Manny’s attack.

Hey! its a win win situation for Arum if this fight goes through besides he own both fighters. Its funny we don’t even know for sure if Cotto wants to even fight Manny Pacquaio
Luis Roman, you made a good point, but you have too look at this. Pacman is adjusting to these heavier fighters. You had a heavier Oscar coming down too 147, and the funny thing that night, Pacman weighed more then Dela Hoya. Dela Hoya walks around maybe 160 at the most when he’s not training or maybe a little bit more. But Manny was able to destroy a bigger man who was walk around naturally heavier.
Too come and think about it, if Dela Hoya came out of that last round before retired , guaranteed he would have been knocked out. He was lucky he didn’t try too attempt to go too distant with Manny Pacquaio.
My point is this. We all know Cotto is a heavier opponent for Manny Pacquaio, Right!!. You have to understand the fatigue of a fighter. When you have a hard time making weight for the weigh inn—your body is emotionally drained, your mind might be telliing you that everything is OK, but the body doesn’t respond as well in the performance, the same thing Dela Hoya went through and look where it got him too retirement.
Here is why I think Cotto will be another victim just like Ricky Hatton was too Manny Pacquaio, and he even walks around heavier then Dela Hoya and Miguel Cotto. Cotto last 2 performance wasn’t too impressive even though he won the fight, he is not the same guy from when he got stopped by Margaritto and we can’t deny that one. Manny is still the more fresher. Cotto is getting more weaker ,weaker, and weaker, it just doesn’t add up. It will be more harder for him too recover from a brutal win that he just had with, Joshua Clottey.
Cotto had two fights that night, when he fought Clottey. 1 was against himself, the fatigue, and the other with his opponent, Clottey. We need to really ask ourselves what going too happen if he where too face the likes of Manny Pacquaio, who is far more of an aggressive and hungrier
fighter then. Cotto doesn’t even look like he wants to fight, again he is not the same fighter.

Brown: Good point on mentioning what Bob Arum has up his sleeves. But in all seriousness if this is a fair fight Cotto will knock Pacquiao out. He is a lot stronger than Manny and can go the distance. I do not think Manny will be able to withstand his power punches. And lets not forget that Cotto’s only loss was a questionable one. Cotto dished out 11 rounds of beating to Margarito before finally being overcome by the “Bricks in his gloves”. Imagine we he would do to Pacquiao who cannot hit as hard (with or without cheating) and who cannot take punches like Margarito did. The only advantage he has over Cotto is speed, but that won’t get him through he fight. Cotto is not Ricky Hatton.

Well luis…. let me tell you,…. anything can happen boxing is a strange sport.
But it just doesn’t add up for Cotto too win this fight if it where too happen, that’s if, who knows we can be wrong. I feel something is in the works for Bob Arum. Lets not forget that he own both fighters, who knows what up his sleeves.

You’re correct about Cotto not dealing w/pressure well. But last time I checked Manny isn’t that Phenomenal either w/pressure. His last two opponents didn’t demonstrate attacking pressure. Yeah they proceeded forward but didn’t land any effective shots to equal Pacman’s dominance. For instance when Pacman stood toe-to-toe w/JMM and EM he showed vulnerability also. Although he won those fights there were mistakes and errors that need to be corrected. No1 is PERFECT and everyone has flaws that can be exposed. So let’s keep that in mind people. I repeat No1 is PERFECT! Anything is possible w/this match-up.

Its not just Pacquaio speed that’s going to be the only factor its going to be his resilience that comes as well. As much as I respect Cottos defense he is going to have a hard time weathering this storm of Pacman. As Cotto survived from his last fight. The question is how long is he going too be able too last?…Theirs a beginning and also and end.
Remember they say this fight is penciled….

We all know that both fighters have KO Power, but SPEED makes the difference. If Cotto could not match Manny’s SPEED then this will be the deciding factor of the fight. We know who’s going to WIN.

Hey itzlock3…..The thing that I love most about Cotto style of boxing, is that he keeps is hands up all the time and shows great discipline. He loves going to the body as well, you got that one right.
The problem with Cotto, is when he gets pressured he’s not the same guy, especially when he got stopped in the Margeritto fight, and maybe even before that actually. Yes!!! Im talking in the same fight he had with Mosley before in 07. When pressure comes on he turns into survivor mode, witch is good only too a point.
Now with a fighter like Manny who is a very good finisher. Will put a lot of tremendous pressure on Cotto. I just don’t see Cotto would be able too survive this fight. As I mention before, Cotto has a problem making weight. all the time, especially at 147. Now could you imagine if Cotto where too trying and make weight at 140 or even at a catch weight, he would be dead. Not only that he would be another victim just like Ricky Hatton. We would hate too see that. Who knows, Strange things can happen in boxing….LOL
Now too you point how Mosley couldn’t knock Cotto out. Do you remember that old saying, !!Styles makes fights!!! Its amazing isn’t.
Mosley loses to Cotto in 07. Cotto gets Stopped by Margarcheato…..LOL
Mosley destroys Margercheato,…here we go again. Styles makes fights.

Hey Itzlock3, you are forgetting Manny has “the stick” ! he trains his abs with the stick lol. I think Cotto can KO Pacquaio “if” Cotto lands 2 clean punches, but Manny’s head movement is out of this world right now, he moves very well in and out and has much quicker hands than Cotto, he would maybe trade with Cotto in the center of the ring, move from side to side, Cotto would trow a few jabs and a hook, Manny will move side and underneath them, then will counter with tremendous speed, landing some and making Cotto go back and move away, Cotto would come back @ Manny trowing the jab and going the body, Manny takes 1 or 2 body shots moves away to the left makes Cotto miss a few jabs and trows a straight left fallowed by a right than lands on Cotto face.
This is how I imagine this fight, with Manny getting a bigger momentum as the rounds go by, don’t get me wrong, I have 150% full respect for Cotto, he is a great fighter, has incredible heart and skills and has the power to KO Manny if he lands flush, but I think Manny would move well and make him miss.

Brown u have my utmost respect too man! But just hear me out for 1 moment. 1st Cotto loves to attack the body repeatedly so Manny better tone his abdomen area. 2nd Manny exchanges WAY too much to not get knocked down or Ko’d w/Cotto’s power. Remember Shane couldn’t knock Cotto out and he managed to land some clean crisp shots. I believe Shane has a lil’ bit more power than Pacman, and Shane is extremely accurate too! So, that shows Cotto can take a show and has significant defense. Well @ least to go the entire fight.

I think Bob Arum needs to smarten up and tell the truth. Lets not forget Shane Mosley will always be in the picture. We need to be honest here. A fight between Pacquaio and Mosley will be a far more better attraction then a Pacquaio and Cotto.
Smell something very fishy and someone is being sneaky. We have a fight that is penciled in for Nov 14, 2009 in Las Vegas, between Manny Pacquaio And Miguel Cotto. Now think about it. The word “”Penciled,”" To my understanding that means to schedule a fight rather then having it in Ink. So we don’t really know for sure if its happening…….LOL
Bob Arum promotes both fighters and we he can’t even confirm it in ink writing, now one whats wrong with this picture….LOL
First of all I find all of this so bull-shit. We all have nothing but true respect for Miguel Cotto, for his determination from his last fight with Clottey, he showed tremendous heart with that nasty cut and was able to weather the storm. I just don’t see how Cotto can drop down and weight to 140 to fight Manny and meanwhile its been such a struggle for him to even fight at 147.
Here’s why Shane deserve more of a fight with Manny then Miguel Cotto.
It would be more of a draw and more money would be made, and yes it can still be made even though Cotto has already beaten Mosley before, in 07, witch can be a valid argument. Mosley has knocked out Margerito and he is the welter weight champion of the world and he is the top guy, we can’t not deny that.
If this fight happens and we are proving wrong, then so be it.
Because I just don’t see a Manny fight and Cotto make any sense even though it will be a good fight otherwise. As much respect I have for Cotto
I still can’t see him beating Pacquaio.
Someone need to start telling the truth.
It makes more sense of a fight with Manny and Mosley.

cotto has absolutely no chance in hell of winning this fight. seriously.
manny is so fast and so accurate with his punches, and cotto has a stupid way of holding his hands where he is wide open for straight punches and uppercuts (look at the zab judah fight). combine that with cotto’s tendency to get wobbly after getting hit with clean shots, and we have a fight ending in similar fashion to hatton vs pacquiao.
cotto doesn’t have much ring generalship (look at the clottey fight; why didn’t he keep him up against the ropes the whole fight?) one-punch KO power (anybody can knock you down with a jab if you’re off balance) and he lost a lot of his swag when margarito crushed him.
@ the guy who said manny has no head movement: LOLOLOL didn’t you see the super slow-mo replays during the hatton fight? he not only moves his head but he moves his head while while throwing fucking counter punches.
pacquaio by KO probably in round 3 or 4 depending on how cotto’s chin is behaving that night. they might even throw in the fucking towel.

I have to speak for cotto here…he was fighting probably the toughest welterweight out there, fighting most of the fight with one eye and he still came through..this is a man who for the past 7 or 8 years has fought only the best out there. ( except jennings )and has avoided no one.I think pac man is seriously underestimating cotto…who connot even be compared to a washed up hatton or a totally over the hill olh…manny is good but take away the hype of last 2 fights please… and for me this is cottos time.

Hey its all good, over here…..Its make it more interesting reading different perspectives on opinions. That’s the hole point, we all can’t agree on everything. Here’s an example, Larry Merchant As I mention earlier on these blogs before, what in the hell is he talking about after his closing conclusion after each fight till this day I still don’t understand him…..LOL….And another guy is Harold Lederman,
What fight is he fucking watching….LOL that guy is so blind as shit. Come on why do they pay this fucking guy…..LOL
You know what…….. punch_in_the_eye….The fight will only happen if Cotto is willing too fight Manny. Because after his last performance I don’t think he wants too fight anyone right now until he actually recovers…LOL From that tough draining brutal win over Clottey.
I can tell you this one he will never hive Clottey a rematch….LOL

This time, I agree with you Brian Brown.
If the fight between Pacquiao and Cotto will happen, Cotto should be very much prepared if he wants to win. Manny is not an easy opponent, he has speed, power and the determination to win.
BTW – It’s nice to exchange opinions with you guys. This makes the boxing world more interesting.

So Lets get this fight on, thats if Cotto is willing to fight Manny Pacquaio. We still haven’t really heard if the fight is actually going too happen or a set date.
Please don’t get me wrong I wasn’t underestimating Cotto we just see some holes in him that are getting bigger and bigger and bigger.
Hey…Itszlock3…its all good your still my boy but I have to disagree on this one…..LOL… Here’s why, I have Manny Knocking Cotto out. He is much faster and quicker and he has power at the same time. Don’t get me wrong Cotto has power as well. Cotto is getting more and more exposed, especially in the later rounds, even though he does weather the storm the real question is, how long is he going too last when he faces fighter like Manny Pacquaio who knows how too finish a fight unlike Clottey who had the every opportunity but failed too do so.

I concur w/u Leo ppl are underestimating Cotto BIG time..yeah the victory wasn’t sensational BUT u guys r talking like Clotty is a BUM! Clotty is a legitimate opponent, and not to mention the accidental head-butt which caused a cut over cotto’s eye. So cotto faught w/impaired vision and still managed 2 win, that says a lot about his ability..I just don’t see Pacman destroying cotto @ all. Although cotto lost to margarito he totally ABUSED margarito throughout the fight until the last few rounds! Manny is too aggressive which can b a real problem if cotto connects w/one of his power shots. Cause cotto put clotty down w/a JAB people! Plus Manny does not move his head enough which could also lead to a KO! It should b an excellent fight though, I can’t wait to see the outcome!

i think that people are underestimating cotto way to much as to say that he will destroyed. i believ that dlh was very very slow still it took manny 8 round to finally beat him. sure cotto wasnt spectacular but its not easy to fight an opponent like clottey… his defense is one of the best, not leaving out those powerful right hands. cotto has much better footwork thatn dlh there for he will not just stand there and get punished he will use his jab foot work and head movement to atleast dodge some of paquiaos bombs. i think that this will be a tuff fight for both and really it can go either way. while cotto has some trouble with southpaws manny has never been punished tyo the body which cotto loves to do- those left hooks to the body. i think in the end it will be a matter of who has the best conditioning which might be manny pacquiao. both certainly hav the skills and heart to finish the job, lets just wait and see what happens with the neggociations..

Yes I agree, this is why I love this division, because of the options. Their is so much talent in this smaller weight class. Lots of fighters that can match up with one another and still it will be a great show for the public not matter what
After just witnessing a Cotto’s split decision over Clottey witch he didn’t look to impressive doing it. can we honestly say the the Cotto Show is going to really last long. We can give him all the credit in the world for over coming the barriers and weathering the storm of Clottey. But how long is this rain truly going too last, lets be honest here to our selves.
Here are the options, Cotto can take a fight with Manny Pacquiao witch will pay him a real significant amount of money, and potentially loose the fight at the same time, or he can move on too another opponent and try too rebuild himself and maybe retire with dignity. Because lets face it, he’s not the same fighter.

The way Cotto looked on Saturday I think Manny will knock him out, Manny was there on front row and like I said before I loved what he saw, he has a big chance of winning that fight and make millions @ the same time.
It’s actually went more like this:
After seeing the way Cotto was exposed and the thousands of Puerto Rican fans Cotto has, Pacquiao imminently told his promoter Bob Arum to make a deal with the WBO welterweight champion.
It’s a no brainier for Manny, Cotto is still very good, but he didn’t look like the dominant force he was before the Margarito fight, compare to Mosley, Cotto is an easy target for Manny.
This fight will last much longer than the Hatton one, that’s for sure.
