Harris Stops Quintero in 8!
August 1, 2009 by Art Gallegos
Quintero vs Harris… Southpaw veteran Tyrone Harris (24-5, 16 KOs) stopped Tijuana’s Marvin Quintero (16-2, 12 KOs) in eight rounds Friday night at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula Ca., putting a end to Quintero’s 12 fight win streak. Harris simply out boxed and out punched Quintero for five straight rounds keeping him out of rhythm with a quick jab and hard counter punching. A turning point in the fight seemed to come in the sixth round when Harris abandoned his jab and allowed Quintero to win some rounds but in the eighth it was referee Raul Caiz Jr. stepping in to stop the action after Harris unloaded a flurry of unanswered punches to an already hurt Quintero. Promoter Gary Shaw, along with the crowd thought the fight was called a bit premature. ”He never went down, It’s a bad stoppage,” said Shaw.
In the co-feature, undefeated Chris Avalos (11-0, 9 KOs) scored an explosive second round TKO over Andre Wilson (11-3, 9 KOs). After a tentative first round, Avalos opened up and let his hands go to open round two, landing a left hook that sent Wilson to the canvas for the first of two knockdowns. Wilson beat the count both times but after a flurry of unanswered shots, referee Jose Cobian stepped in to call a halt to the punishment. Time was 1:28.
Mexico City’s Freddy Hernandez (25-1, 18 KOs) scored an eighth round unanimous decision over the rugged Hicklet Lau (20-20, 9KOs). Lau went down in the fourth round and again in the eighth but would go the distance. Scores were 80-69 and 80-70 twice.
David De La Mora (17-0, 11 KOs) pulled out a unanimous decision win over the tough Benji Garcia (14-12-3, 1 KO) after eight rounds. Scores were 78-74, 77-75 and 80-72 all for De La Mora.
Crowd favorite Deshon Johnson (7-2-2, 5 KOs) stopped Alan Velasco (8-3-2, 3 KOs) at 2:46 of the second round. Velasco never went down but was obviously hurt and on shaky legs.
Undefeated prospect Aris Ambriz (11-0, 6 KOs) punished Daniel Gonzalez (11-21, 4 KOs) for 1:34 until Jose Cobian, continuing with the early stoppages, stepped in to call it.
