Fundraiser for upcoming October Banquet

If you can’t beat ’em in the ring, try beating them on the greens!

That was the motto at the recent World Boxing Hall of Fame “Twilight Night Golf” outing. The event was a fundraiser for the non-profit organization based in Los Angeles, California and was hosted by President Mando Muñiz, and WBHF Board Members Paul Ritchie and Richard Perry.

golfThe tournament was held at the Golden Era Golf Course in San Jacinto where 72 players battled each other for bragging rights on the links. Since this was a nighttime event, the participating fighters, champs, board members and players all had to all wear special glow-in-the-dark collars and hard hats as safety was a top priority during their swing shifts.

Foursomes were formed at the start of the fundraiser and each player received a different color of golf ball; a buffet was also served to the guests. Showing off their championship form were boxers Bobby “Schoolboy” Chacon, Mando Muñiz, Danny “Little Red” Lopez, Rodolfo “Gato” Gonzalez and Gil King.

Even though they used glow-in-the-dark golf balls, many dimpled balls were lost on drives to the hole. That’s what made this event such a fun and unique one.

Golfing isn’t easy in broad daylight…Now try hitting the ball in the pitch black of darkness!

For KO King Rodolfo “El Gato” Gonzalez, a personal best was also accomplished during the evening. A couple of days after the weekend event, he boasted, “I hold the record for never losing the same ball during nine holes of night golf–and I never broke any windows!”

His wife Barbara laughs and confirms to me, “Yes, this was the first time he never had to replace his golf ball. He did the best ever!”

Gonzalez, a former WBC Lightweight champ, says he enjoys the occasional game of golf. “I like to play golf,” comments Gonzalez. “I’m also going to be playing in a celebrity golf tournament on September 25 in Long Beach. It’s great to support these groups.”

“It was a great night, a great fundraiser,” said President Muñiz. “People enjoyed themselves and we made some new friends in boxing. Now we’re getting ready for the big banquet next month.”

golf2The boxing group will be putting on their biggest event of the year–the annual Banquet of Champions with this year’s class of new inductees. It will be held on Saturday, October 24 at the L.A. Airport Marriott. This is the WBHF’s 30th Anniversary and the weekend will also feature an Autograph and Memorabilia Show for the fans.
