DEMARCO: I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE A CHAMPION
November 3, 2009 by Felipe Leon
After his near perfect destruction on the #2 WBC ranked lightweight Jose Alfaro (23-5, 20KO) of Nicaragua last Saturday night to capture the interim WBC lightweight title, Tijuana’s Antonio DeMarco (23-1-1, 17KO) reflected on his win and the future.
“I am very happy, especially now that I am back home with my daughter and my wife,” the 23-year-old DeMarco stated. “In all honesty, I never thought I would be able to call myself a world champion.”

Although the humble DeMarco is still in the new green and gold accessory he now wears around his waist, he now sees the full fledged WBC lightweight title that Edwin Valero holds within his reach.
“Yes, I can see it as attainable,” DeMarco says confidently. “I like challenges and that is what we are aiming for.”
“I thought the fight was going to be a lot tougher,” DeMarco expressed regarding his 10th round stoppage over the hard hitting Alfaro. “Alfaro is a great fighter, a former world champion but I can only attribute my win to the hard work and preparation we did in the gym.”
“We didn’t talk about a fight with Valero with my promoter, Gary Shaw,” the new champion added. “This was time to celebrate but we will see what happens in the future.”
