Undefeated junior middleweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is not denying that he used furosemide prior to his decision win over Troy Rowland on the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto undercard on November 14. Chavez recently tested positive for the drug and is facing a suspension and fine of 100,000 from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Chavez admits of struggling to make weight and says his team including Chavez was unaware that furosemide was a banned drug within the Nevada rules. He admits that he made a mistake but he will fight the charges to get a lighter from of punishment. He plans to fight on the basis that he didn’t use a malicious substance that gave him an advantage in the right and neither he nor his team tried to hide their use of the drug. It was simple mistake and he says those types of drugs are used often by many boxers who are having trouble making weight.

“I dehydrated a lot {while making weight} and I was even hospitalized {few days before the fight}. They put me glucose and vitamins into me and I absorbed it all and because of that I was struggling to make weight. So I took the diuretic to help me descent faster,” Chavez Jr. told The Record.

“I know what a diuretic is. I know a diuretic is used to urinate. I did not believe that it would cause a positive result {in the pre-fight drug test}. It is not a substance that gave me an advantage and I did not try to conceal noting. I will go to Las Vegas to clarify what happened so they can determine what happens with me. I only used it to make weight and I had no idea the drug was prohibited.”

The World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman says he wants Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to be examined by a specialist to analysis gauge at what weight category he should compete.

“We have send Julio to a specialist at UCLA to check him in regards to the content of fat in his body, and received a scientific opinion about where he should fight. I would like him to do that- yes”

However, all attempts by Don Jose to contact Julio Jr. have so far proved unsuccessful. So he’s asking Julio to call him.

So if Chavez moves up in weight I guess he won’t be fighting any high profile names, but rather bums again!

  1. NO excuses what so ever…as a fighter you’re given plenty of time and training to make weight. He has no desire or discipline to do so or else he would make it his obligation to make weight. He’s a cheater and was more than aware of what he using. It’s good that he was fined, cheaters deserve to be penalized!!

  2. What happens is he eats to much junk, gains to much weight in between fights, I was watching the Chavez movie and there is a part where Chavez Sr. tells him just that, that he can’t be gaining that much weight in between fights.

  3. I don’t believe what Chavez is saying for a moment. His corner and his father have been in boxing for over 30 years. A banned substance is a banned substance. He can’t say that he used it even though it didn’t give him an advantage. I do admit he needs all the help he can get. I don’t consider him a great fighter. He has decent skills but has a lot to prove.
He hasn’t beaten any credible, ranked fighter.
Another thing, he said he used it to make weight. What is that all about ? He was fighting at 154 in his last fight which awas two months ago. Now he can’t even make 160 and needs an illigal substance to do so. What happened during those two months ? Their may be something else going on that we don’t know about. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt but it’s tough to swallow what he is saying. If he wants to fight at heavyweight, then fine. He may want to fight Fernando Vargas who claims he wants to come back.
