Five-time world boxing champion Johnny Tapia was returned to jail on Thursday after reportedly failing a urine analysis.

Nataria Powdrell, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Detention Center, says Tapia’s urine tested positive for cocaine.

Tapia was undergoing the urine test as part of the conditions of his release into a community custody program rather than remaining behind bars on a probation violation.

Powdrell of the Metropolitan Detention Center said that Tapia will remain jailed until he can appear before a judge sometime next week.

In early January, Tapia petitioned to be allowed into the community custody program in order to train for a March boxing match.

District judge Kenneth Martinez granted the request, with conditions.

“He will be at home, be allowed to train, under strict conditions, and is considered in custody,” Tapia’s attorney, Erlinda Johnson, said at the time.

Tapia (57-5-2, 29 KOs) returned to the ring with a fourth round technical knockout over Carlos “El Gallo” Sanchez (5-1, 2KOs) on March 7th at the Ohkay Casino. It was the 43-year-old boxer’s first bout in three years.

Tapia, who had been sentenced to prison on a drug charge, was later released on probation, but last summer he was jailed for leaving town and going to Red River – a violation of the terms of his probation.
