It started as a rumor until Gary Shaw, Alfredo Angulo’s promoter, confirmed it with Steve Kim from MaxBoxing that the hard-hitting Mexican just recently turned down $750,000 for a crack at middleweight champion Sergio Martinez- demanding a million bucks- and losing his shot at becoming the only boxer to appear on HBO three times in 2010.

HBO was guaranteeing Angulo a reappearance if he lost on HBO while the WBC was not going to penalize him and he’d still be number one at 154 pounds.

I can’t understand why “El Perro” will walk away with his tail between his legs on such opportunity. $750,000 is a lot of money considering he only made $350,000 in his last fight against Joachim Alcine. Demanding $1 million dollars is obviously without thought.

Sergio Martinez is a threat but $750K is well worth the risk and there is no shame in losing against a worthy opponent.

Do you think Alfredo Angulo turning down a fight with Sergio Martinez was the right move?

  1. I wouldn’t have taken the fight either. Martinez is a bad matchup for angulo to begin with, a slick boxer puncher who moves around the ring very well. Angulo would get outboxed fairly easy and all the momentum he built up in 2010 would have gone down the drain. 750K isn’t that much after you taxes and trainers, remember he is fighting one of the top 3 pound for pound fighters today and he deserves a million at least for that fight because he has a fan base and a very exciting style.

  2. turning down 750,000 while he just finish making 350,000 in his last fight? martinez is a bigger name and a champ at that. that was a great apportunity for angulo and the reason why he said no was???? i dont get it. when you hungry you go out there and fight whatever they bring. angulo is not a champion and is not ranked so why would he demand a million??? now they will pick a soft fighter for angulo and he will make 300,000 and be happy with it.. BAD MOVE. HORRIBLE

  3. I think angulo is not affraid to fight anyone. He’s proven to be a top contender and he deserves a million dollars. If I was fighting the champ and if I knew I can bring fans into the stadium then I’m gonna get as much cash I can get.I think it would be a good fight but sergio martinez doesn’t have punching power. One good connect from angulo can set up a knock out.

  4. Could it be that he simply isn’t ready ? When was the fight scheduled for ? This article made more questions than it answered.

  5. In my opinion a fight with Martinez doesn’t sound that exciting….I would like to see him fight another brawler…..
