The ante has been raised in one of 2011’s highest stakes bouts, as it was announced today that the vacant WBC Super Welterweight World Championship will be on the line when Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Matthew “Magic” Hatton meet on March 5 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California in a bout which will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark.

“This is a great opportunity and an honor to fight for the WBC Super Welterweight World Title as I have a lot of respect for the WBC,” said Alvarez. “I said that I wanted to fight for a world title in 2011 and now the opportunity has arrived.”

“I have been waiting my entire career to fight for a world title and I can’t put into words how excited I am,” said Hatton. “I was already really motivated for this fight and this just adds to it. I am ready to bring the belt back with me to Manchester.”

“Fighting for a major world championship belt for the first time is the moment every fighter dreams of and when that belt is on the line, that’s when you see a man at his best,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “I thank the WBC for rewarding Alvarez and Hatton for their hard work and I know that they will leave it all in the ring on March 5.”

Alvarez vs. Hatton, a 12 round bout for the WBC Super Welterweight World Championship, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Canelo Promotions and Hatton Promotions. The evening’s co-feature, Daniel Ponce De Leon vs. Adrien Broner, a 10 round junior lightweight fight, is presented by Golden Boy Promotion in association with R & R Promotions. The event is sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, DeWalt Tools and Tres Generaciones. HBO will televise the doubleheader as part of their Boxing After Dark series beginning at 10:30pm ET/PT

  1. @ Glen,
With all due respect, how do you figure that “Saul Alvarez is more than ready and worthy enough and ready for a world title shot ??” His last two opponets had a combined 23 loses and pushing 40 years old. Not to mention being almost dropped by Jose Cotto. Canelo is overrated and Matthew Hatton is another walk in the park. If it’s the WBC’s goal to make Canelo champion so be it. Let’s see if he will then fight the mandatory challenger. Better yet, he can unify the title.
Then again Hatton may land a stray bullet and win the title. LMAO !!

  2. I like Alvarez, but there is no way he should have this chance so early in the year, but he dosen’t make the decisions for the WBC, he just fights whoever they have put in front of him. Where the hell is Alfredo Angulo, thats who he would be Challenging !

  3. @ Jesus we know why Chavez won’t fight the real champions lol, Canelo on the other hand I don’t think is worthy of a title just yet I would have liked to see him step up competition in a few more fights after Hatton and then fight for a belt that somebody actually holds. He’s still young and has plenty of time to win world titles but thats the WBC for you.

  4. Firstly, Matthew Hatton is a European champion, which automatically grants him a top 10 ranking with the WBC. Secondly, Saul Alvarez is more than ready and worthy enough and ready for a world title shot. I’ll admit, Matthew Hatton will be way out of his depth, and I believe he’s done himself proud just by becoming European champion as a couple of years ago I didn’t even believe he would go that far, but he has and I congratulate him.

Don’t worry, Saul Alvarez will be tested soon enough…

    Glen.

  5. It amazes me how the WBC continues to cater to Mexican fighters. Since when did the WBC make Matthew Hatton a highly ranked fighter good enough to fight for a title ?? Of course, nobody is fooled by this and the only logical explanation is that they want Canelo to be a world champion even if it’s done in this dispicable manner. I am not implying that Canelo isn’t a good fighter. He has fast hands and decent boxing skills. This simply isn’t the way to win the respect from the fans.

This sounds like when Chavez was announced as fighting for a ‘vacated’ title. Why not fight the champions ??
