Just like Erik Morales who is trying to become the first Mexican to win a world title in four divisions, his long time rival Marco Antonio Barrera (66-7, 43 KOs), returns February 12 at the Olympic Coliseum in the University of Guadalajara to pursuit the same dream. Barrera will take on US-based Dominican, Jose Arias (15-1, 9 KOs).

This will probably be Barrera’s easiest fight and it’s a bit embarrassing seeing a veteran fighter fighting a kid with only 15 professional fights. With out a doubt, this will be Barrera’s worst opponent he ever faced.

Freddie Roach was in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, to train Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and he made time during his busy schedule to help Barrera for his upcoming fight.

Barrera has not fought since a 10-round decision victory against Adailton De Jesus of Brazil in June. That was his first fight since March 2009, when he was dominated in a bloody fifth-round technical decision loss to Amir Khan in England.

What’s your opinion? Should Barrera hang up the gloves already or do you think there’s still fuel in his tank?

  1. Barrera has no business challenging any champion at 140 lbs until he beats a top ten credible contender. Same goes for Morales. And please, can we do away with the ‘diamond’ and ‘silver’ belts ???? How about a ‘golden’ belt for our golden oldies. LMAO !!

  2. They say that Morales wants Maidana that is sad that he would put himself at risk at fighting a serious power puncher while his speed and skills are all but gone. I would have honestly rather seen him fight Marquez because if Marquez knocks him out it wouldn’t be as bad as what Maidana would do to him. Hopefully he smartens up and doesn’t pursue that fight or at least Maidana ignores him I would hate to see Morales get punished.

  3. Really? don’t know what he’s still fighting for, He nor Morales won’t win a Jr. Welterweight title unless some serious strings are pulled and somehow someone is stripped of a belt and then it’s put up for sale even then it would be really hard for either one to get a belt they are past their prime and with not much left in either of their tanks and it’s a loaded division. Since Marquez/Morales is off does anyone have any guess who they will get to take the spot of Morales? I was thinking Guerrero since he was recently running his mouth about the champ I’d like to see Marquez take him on and win because I don’t think the Ghost is ready for him he struggled against Casamayor and doesn’t look to be a power puncher that can drop Marquez and he’s not on Marquez’s level from a technical standpoint either. Although I did here they are still trying to get Katsidis/Guerrero on the Marquez undercard so idk either fight sounds great to be honest.
