Brandon Rios’ manger, Cameron Dunkin, revealed that during Rios’ fight against Miguel Acosta on Saturday night from the Palms in Las Vegas, Rios broke his right hand during the eight round. Rios never complained nor told his trainer, Robert Garcia. During the fight-ending sequence in the 10th round, he landed at least three hard right hands to Acosta’s head.

Rios did not have the hand X-rayed until Sunday when he was back home in Oxnard, Calif., but they knew it was broken after the fight because as Dunkin said, “the bone was sticking up and his hand was swollen.”

Rios, 24, has gotten his hand cast and will be out for four to five months. So what’s next for Rios? Brandon Rios could face one of the legends of the sport, Marco Antonio Barrera in his first defense. Rios’ next opponent will be decided by manager Cameron Dunkin and trainer Robert Garcia but the match is expected to be against a big name. Barrera is near the end of his career but would like to become the first Mexican fighter to win titles in four weight classes. Barrera has won titles at junior featherweight, featherweight and junior lightweight so it’s possible this fight might happen.

What do you think? Brandon Rios vs Marco Antonio Barrera?

  1. What I see here is that the current active Mexican fighters with belts in three weight classes all want that forth title. The first one to do it would go down in history as one of the country’s best. Imagine doing what JC Chavez, Ruben Olivares, Miguel Canto, Ricardo Lopez, etc could not do ?? Barrera and Morales have no choice but to fight the top guys and hope they win in order to get a title shot. Morales vs Maidana is a non title fight but an (unlikely) win for Morales puts him in line for a title shot. Barrera is looking to get that title shot now. If he should win, he would be a legend.

  2. @ Danny its to give these younger fighters a big name on their record doesn’t do much for us hardcore fans who know these guys are old and in their prime Barrera would beat Rios and Morales would outbox Maidana. I think Morales is in for a worse beating then Barrera is. Honestly I think Morales and Barrera should fight again they can generate good money and its not as much as a mis match as the fight against Rios or Maidana. @ Torbi slow it down guy I like Mercito but he hasn’t fought anybody of note (though I know he’s looking to) just yet so I’d give the kid time he’s got the skills to be great but what needs to be seen is how he is against another guy with a similar skill set see if he has the heart to be great and I don’t think his chin has really been tested either.

  3. What is it with promoters putting the old end of their careers fighters in with tough young guns?We have Rios probably fighting Barrera and Maidans v Morales. Both fights I think the young fighter ko’s the old.

  4. Rios – Katsidis I think it will be a great fight. But Rios can’t bet Soto. I think Soto – Gesta also is a great match. Katsidis & Rios, are afraid to face Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta, I knew that Since many times Gesta’s manager told Rios & Katsidis camps to schedule them but they did not accept. The last option of Mercito’s Camp is to match up w/ Hector Velasquez, but unfortunately Velasquez back out in the last minute. That’s why a braveman Trazancos, was forced to fight Gesta even though he knew that he can do nothing.
I am hoping that someday Mercito ” No Mercy” Gesta, will rise like Paquiao. Go… go Gesta! All Muaythai & Kickboxing Fighters will support you.

  5. Barrera isn’t completely shot but I don’t think he stands too much of a chance against Rios at his age. Rios is a tough SOB he swung that broken hand like nothing in the 9th and 10th rounds. Rios needs to pursue Soto (granted he wins his next fights) instead in my opinion that is a much better fight then Barrera at this point in his career and it would be a unification bout. I want to see Rios/Katsidis bang it out but that won’t happen that would be great though.
