Saul “Canelo” Alvarez & Jose Sulaiman

Jose Sulaiman, President of the WBC, continues to hurt the sport of boxing with his ridiculous decisions. In his most recent act, he suddenly gave Saul “Canelo” Alvarez the opportunity to grab the vacant WBC super welterweight title which he did with a one-sided unanimous decision over Matthew Hatton earlier this month.

Now Sulaiman is trying to protect his hand made champ by cherry picking his next opponent. Instead of having Canelo face the number one contender, Alfredo Angulo, Sulaiman announced today at his weekly press meeting in Mexico City that Ryan Rhodes has been named as the official challenger for the new WBC champ. Sulaiman also announced that the fight will take place in Alvarez’s backyard of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

“We have chosen Ryan Rhodes because he is the highest available contender. We looked at someone higher than him but we don’t believe Angulo is available,’ said WBC president Jose Sulaiman.

Alfredo Angulo has been missing in action since his visa issue that was preventing him from fighting in the United States but what issues is he having from fighting in Mexico?

I understand Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo is not able to fight in the U.S. but since Alvarez is already fighting in Mexico, why not have him fight Angulo? It just doesn’t make sense and everyone is noticing how corrupt the President of the WBC is.

Rhodes last fought in December and hasn’t fought for a title since 1997 when he lost to Otis Grant for the WBO belt. The WBC could have chosen a better opponent who is in the top ten rankings like Paul Williams or the former Olympian Vanes Martirosyan but Sulaiman is clearly protecting his investment from the former interim WBO champ Alfredo “Perro” Angulo and everyone else that will beat “Canelo”.

This is what is hurting the sport but sooner or later Sulaiman is going to run out of excuses and his fighters will be exposed.

What’s your opinion?

  1. As we see, this article was written about 6 months ago and Suliaman has CONTINUED his WICKED WAYS!! And.. it will continue, non-stop, there’s NO SHAME IN HIS GAME!!. From what I understand the TRUE reason why the Morales vs Barrios fight was scratched was because the networks have expressed that they WILL NOT accept Barrios as a viable opponent for Morales on the Mayweather vs Ortiz mega fight card. They seem to have more class than Suliaman. A LOT MORE!! They understood that it would’ve TARNISHED the event the same way Suliaman has TARNISHED our sport over the 10-15 years.

  2. IF… Chavez Jr wins the sport, OUR sport, will have TWO more champions that will practically hold their titles “hostage” and NONE of the TRUE TOP contenders will get their MERITED opportunities. We will be DISRESPECTED by the WBC/Suliaman as they attempt to insult our intelligence by naming their hideous LOW RISK and UN-worthy “mandatory #1 challengers” as if were were fools.

We already know that Chavez Jr CAN’T defeat NONE of the TRUE top ten middleweights. It’s easy as heck to name 10 top 160Lb’ers that Chavez can’t beat. Man, he can’t even beat any of the 10 BEST 154Lb’ers neither. Something to think about, eh?

As for Canelo, I tend to believe that he’s is the better fighter of the two and his defenses might be a bit more acceptable, only time will tell BUT.. for now NONE the WORTHY contenders like Angulo, Martirsoyon, Williams, Wolak… will recieve the opportunities that they EARNED in the ring, not now and maybe never.

I wish that they would fight each other so maybe Canelo Alvarez can establish a WORLD RECORD by winning ANOTHER world title in TWO different weight divisions WITHOUT EVER HAVING DEFEATING ANY TRUE TOP CONTENDERS IN THE PROCESS!!

  3. @ Ricardo, looked like your boy struggled quite a bit against Billy Lyell (who is he?) so I wouldn’t say outclassed. By the way the same thing can be said about Chavez who the hell has he fought? Elite? Maybe against the cans he never seems to stop fighting. Angulo would beat Canelo and Chavez Jr.

  4. Canelo is a chicken shit i absolutely belive he can’t beat angulo. i absolutely know he can’t beat Chavez jr who i’m not afraid to say is my favorite boxer they have been putting him in with chumps who are outclassed and have no name brand. Canelo is a joke to me and as long as he does not fight my boy chavez jr wich i know Chavez jr will win the fight then canelo should not be considered an elite figther. Canelo figth better boxers like chavez jr-miguel cotto–angulo-mayweather-pacquiao beat them and i will consider you a good figther until then you’re a joke.

  5. Promoters should make Cotto vs Canelo. Unless they want Cotto to be in his late 30s. They may be bold enough to challenge Mayweather in about 5-6 years.

  6. It’s sad for true boxing fans, this could needed more time with better opponents it in 2 years he could have been a real champion, now they will milk that title and all they are doing is loosing valuable time when putting him in with low class oppoennents.

It’s a shame, the kid has talent, but giving him a title and then keep on with the easy fights wont help him in any way.

  7. canelo will be the next chavez j.r… 60-0- 54 ko’s against nobody’s. either put this guy in with some champs or this will be a paper champ for the ages. he was handed the belt at 20 years old. if he was to young u should of never gave him the title.

  8. Sulaiman proved me wrong. I thought he would pick one of Canelo’s past opponents and give him a rematch. LMAO !! Rhodes is another “top” European champion who was never before ranked by the WBC and all of a sudden he is now the “official” challenger ???

Does this mean Felix Sturm will be the official challenger to Chavez after they hand him the middleweight title. This would put the WBC on a European streak…just a thought using Sulaiman’s logic…

  9. All in all Sulliman is the main guy and what can we as fans do. Lets face it … he runs the show. In my opinion lets let the chips fall where they fall and enjoy some good fights. I must admit, its a little unfair to the guys that do deserves these shot, but hey..they are as stuck as the fans are.

  10. If they are not going to give Canelo the best fights and if they are not going to give Chavez Jr the best fights, might as well pit them against each other.

It would probably make a ton of money.

  11. EDGAR, I recently predicted that Suliaman would do this, remember? He’s protecting his new “cash cow” just like he will surely do IF Chavez Jr defeats Zbik. I don’t believe any KNOWLEDGEABLE fan expected Canelo to fight Angulo even though he’s the “champ”. The title “champion’ means the he’s supposed to PROVE that’s what he is, thee CHAMP. Can you imagine the lame excuse that “The champ is not ready to face the top contenders of the division he reigns over”??!! If he can’t face the best then he should VACATE the title and let the fighters that have EARNED their opportunities with BLOOD, SWEAT and SACRIFICE do what he won’t do…. PUT IT ALL ON THE LINE!! Oh well…. Peace!

  12. @Eva I agree, it’s not Canelo’s Fault. Canelo is a young fighter and will take any opportunity he can I don’t blame him. I blame Sullaman and his doing the same thing with Chavez Jr.

  13. it isnt canelos fault that jose sullaman is corupt i think angulo would beat him up canelo is a very good fighter so who nos eny thing can happen

  14. Well we all knew this was coming, Angulo vs. Canelo is too high risk and that corrupt bastard Sulaiman names who as the challenger? Somebody who is getting old and has little to no relevance in the division. Angulo should get this fight considering he’s a fan favorite and a guy who was actually fighting descent competition. Not to mention there is nothing banning him from fighting in Mexico so they can’t fool anybody by saying they don’t believe he’s available. All this is, is a safety fight for over-hyped Canelo. I knew the belt would bring trouble and as long as he has it he will lose creditability and soon people will get fed up like they are with Chavez Jr.
