Saying Floyd Mayweather Jr. is number one is an understatement. Many boxing polls have dropped him and you can’t blame them. Floyd hasn’t fought and has nothing scheduled other than a court hearing. It’s sad to say but his legal issues have put his career in jeopardy.

Mayweather has a court date on April 28 in Las Vegas for allegedly roughing up his baby mamma, Josie Harris. We should know then if he’ll fight again in 2011 or if he will serve time. For us boxing fans, seeing our favorite fighter in the ring is an adrenaline rush and nerve breaking at the same time. Our hands get sweaty, you can’t stay still… well at least for me and its because anything can happen once they enter that squared circle.

Whether you love him or despise him, there is no denying that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is one of the world’s elite fighters and while his out partying with Curtis James Jackson, better known as 50 Cent, one will continue to wonder if we will ever see him in the ring again.

What’s your opinion, should Floyd Mayweather Jr. still be considered number 1?

  1. @Johnny Boy – you’re absolutely right about Fairweather not fighting. AND – the less you
fight, the more ring-rust you accumulate. You let one, two or three years go by between fights — you’re NOT the same boxer you were last time you fought. As time goes along, my guess is that his training habits are becoming more and more lax, his drinking (etc) increases, his habits become lazy and, perhaps most important of all: the FIRE starts to go out. And as goes the fire, so goes the heart. And on top of it all – HE AIN’T GETTING ANY YOUNGER.

Also, he’s got a ton of EMOTIONAL stress weighing on him, what with all the legal trouble, the prospect of ending up in the hoosegow for some years. That kind of mental stress DEPLETES a persons energy terribly. EVERYTHING, in terms of advantage, is stacked against this guy, and it’s getting worse with each passing year – hell, month.

I think he’s in for a BIG surprise, next he steps into the ring.

  2. Plain and simple you don’t fight your not number one. Not to say Floyd isn’t a great fighter and he can be number one but when you rarely fight those that are working harder then you are surely to pass you up. Like or not you can have all the skill in the world, but if you don’t do your job then you lose it to the guy thats willing to give more and do more for that position. Exactly what we see with Mayweather cant be #1 if you don’t fight.

  3. This is “Junito” Jay not the JAY with the hidden comment. There is no way in hell or on this earth that anyone could consider Floyd p4p champ. I have said this before and I will say it again, Floyd Mayweather is the saddest story in boxing and hes never lost a fight. Hes believeing the illusion that he has been selling to boxing fans his entire career. I’ll say it very simply, Floyd is a lie, a trick, a scam, a prank, a fake, an allaberate hoax and ultimitly a joke. Its gone on way to long, his entire career and record is mediocre at best. Every and I mean every elite fighter(which arnt many)he has ever faced either came out of retirement, were past their prime or had one foot out the door and were ready for retirement within two years. Personally I never saw him as p4p champ, its real easy guys simply think to your selves how many good fighters have come up while Floyd has been in boxing. I can count alot, now think how many of those guys Floyd has fought. What ever your number is Im sure its not many. How many times has floyd even defended a title, it seems to me that everytime it comes time to face #1 contenders floyd vacates his title and is then fighting some chump for his. I always said Floyd was a good boxer but never p4p much less “the best ever” as he puts it, he just hasent put in the work. His record and all the good not just great fighters hes avoided proves that he always takes the path of least resistance. The only thing I believe that floyd has said is that hes an entertainer lol because a warrior HE IS NOT!!. As for him being P4P champ or “TBE”, thats an illusion only him and his misgiuded fans believe. I never ever liked floyd, because just being good isnt enough of a reason to become a fan. I always said he was a clown and a fony. A talented clown but a clown none the less, and He continues to prove me right. Floyd Mayweather the saddest story in boxing. Written by Eugenio Romero AKA Junito AKA Jay lmao.

  4. Floyd shouldn’t be considered #1. He hasn’t fought in over one year and it doesn’t seem that he will fight in 2011. At least not in the boxing ring. I’m sure some will challenge him when Floyd is close to 40. just watch…

  5. Tijuanaboxing says:

“To me the answer is HELL NO!”

    Paul B. says:

    …and you’re telling US to calm down?… 🙂

Actually, I think your assessment is right on the money, so to speak.

  6. People calm down, who cares if Floyd has millions or not, as far as I know he hasn’t stole the money, all we care here is boxing, and the question here was and still is: What’s your opinion, should Floyd Mayweather Jr. still be considered number 1?

To me the answer is HELL NO!
No one should care if you are Floyd Mayweather, Many Pacquiao, or Sugar Ray Leonard, you can’t be P4P or number one if you take time off from the sport and just say “oh well I was last time I fought” there are other active fighters who are just as good if not better than Floyd, they are actually fighting good opponents and are moving their way up in the P4P or top 10 list, if you don’t fight well you can’t move up or stay up, but the active ones will.

But this unfortunately is part of boxing and how fighters, promoters and the networks will hype a fighter even if in reality he is not that great yet, or never will be, or if he is actually good or great but is avoiding fighting dangerous and challenging opponents.

Having a undefeated record shouldn’t mean much now in days when we have a bunch of alphabet belts and way to many champions around the world, one can get and undefeated record like Floyd by cherry picking his opponents like he does, and don’t get me wrong, I really think Floyd is very good and could be great, but only if he could put all that talent into beating top fighters at their prime like hummm.. well.. Many Pacquiao!, this was and maybe still is his change of shutting everyone’s mouth by beating the great Pacquiao and show us he has the talent to back up his record, but he won’t do that, and asking 100 million dollars to get in the right with the Pacman (quoting Bob Arum here) only means he knows there is a big chance he will lose and he wants a lot of money for his trouble or he knows no one will give him that much money and the fight wont ever happen, I think is both!

  7. @Paul b. Mayweather just turn 34 years-old last month, his fighting a total of 8 charges IF convicted Mayweather could face up to 34 years. I dont think he could fight at age 68.

But in reality I don’t think he will get so many years. He could probably get 3-5 years and in boxing, unless your Bernard Hopkins thats old.

but I hope he dosent do anytime. I still have a bit of hope left of him fighting Manny Pacquiao.

  8. @Edgar: Why do you say it’s sad that Mayweather’s legal troubles have put his career in jeopardy?

Has he not made his bed? Is it not right that he now lay in it? How many club fighters,
or fighters without his name, could expect to escape justice? Mayweather has money. We
have seen time and time again that money CAN buy ‘justice’ in America. This fact brings my blood to a rolling boil, and that right quickly. If justice be truly justice, Floyd Mayweather will be doing some ten or twenty years in stir. And he deserves nothing less.

The only thing to be hoped is that he gets a judge who understands that the ‘elite’ (read, those with big money) are no longer entitled to a less severe judgement than the poor, month-to-month, hand-to-mouth club fighter. If anything, the impoverished club fighter deserves the fucking break. At least he KNOWS what it’s like to be worried about next months’ rent, or buying milk for his baby, or taking his long-suffering wife out for a nice dinner and a bit of a time on the town.

DAMN the heartless, shallow, self-centered ‘fighters’ like Mayweather. He has
WAY more than he deserves. Yes; he IS a good, skilled fighter. But so what??
Does that excuse him from being a decent and honest human? Does that make
him BETTER than you or I? Hell, I’m a two-time Grammy winner. Means very little
to me. I use them as fucking bookends on my shelf. In NO way do I think it gives
me the right to ride herd on anyone else, and hold myself up to the point
where I think I am a god — which is EXACTLY what Mayweather does.

Oy. I’m starting to feel sick to my stomach. It’s OK — this happens when
I dwell too long upon this heartless, soulless, sad-ass excuse for a human
    being.

Please, forgive and bear with me.

  9. @J.Marquez First of all I dont hide the comments. The Fans Do. When enough people dislike the comment it hides it and when people like the comment the comment gets highlighted. Thats how our website works.

So, next time you like a comment make sure you give it a thumbs up or down.

    P.S. You Caps are on.

  10. EXCEPT FOR JAY YOU FINALLY HAVE SOME INTELLIGENT PEOPLE MAKING COMMENTS.
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU EDGAR, WHY DO YOU ASK FOR OUR OPINIONS AND THEN GO AND HIDE THE ONES THAT NO ONE LIKES. DO WE HAVE TO SAY WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR? I DONT AGREE WITH JAY BUT I THINK WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO READ WHAT HES SAYING WITH IT BEING”HIDDEN”.

  11. How I wish to see him inside the jail …..FOREVER and he loses all of his money. That way, he would become FLOYD “NOMOREMONEY” MAYWEATHER, JR.

  12. Deleting the name of this ill-educated trash-talking coward from the list of the p4p fighters is long overdue. He is a great joke in the list.

  13. Don’t kid yourself. Floyd Mayweather has been the worst thing to happen
to pro boxing in HISTORY. His arrogance, his nearly sexual love of money,
and his seemingly absolute inability to stop TALKING about it, has made pro
boxing, in the mind of Joe Public, nothing more than a carny shuck-and-jive
job, on the same level as pro wrestling.

And too…..what, pray tell, do boxers do? They FIGHT. Not Mayweather.
Everybody knows he’ll crawl over broken glass to avoid a fight with pac,
because he (rightly) suspects that he’ll get his arrogant, shit-talkin’,
self-absorbed, scared little ass kicked. He doesn’t love the game and
he does not have the warrior’s heart. He is an abject embarrassment,
and I, and everyone I know, hope he gets what’s coming to his woman-
beating, child-abusing ass. Record be damned – he’s a born loser,
and you’ll see what will become of him. I guarantee it.

    You can’t polish a turd.

  14. Floyd Mayweather is still #1 in my book. No one can match his skills and ring smarts. Spending his life in the ring, he has perfected his game. I wish Floyd the very best in life.
