Humberto Tapia, Tijuana boxer who had made a name for himself as a tough stepping stone for up and coming fighters on both sides of the border, was gunned down late Tuesday evening at the gym where he trained. The suspect responsible for the shooting is Adolfo Huerta, a local professional wrestling promoter, who was in charge of the building in which the Ulloa Gym was located in the eastern sector of Tijuana.
According to police reports, the incident happened on Tuesday night around 6:00pm when Tapia and Huerta came to blows after a heated argument. After everything seemed to have calmed down, Huerta returned to the scene with a hand gun and shot Tapia once in the abdomen. Despite rescue units reaching him quickly, Tapia lost his life on the way to the hospital.
Police Officers arrested the thirty-six year old Huerta on the spot and he was signaled by several witnesses as the man responsible for the shooting. Witnessed stated that both men were inside the gym when they began to argue. As the shouting match escalated, Huerta brandished the fire arm and shot the twenty-five year old Tapia.
Detectives later revealed that the issue originated when Huerta called out Tapia about certain advances the young fighter had made towards his wife.
At one time Humberto Tapia was considered an up and coming talented prospect, so much so that in 2004, The Tijuana Boxing Commission chose him as the Rookie of the Year. His best year was 2007 when he captured the WBC FECOMBOX jr. welterweight title via a unanimous decision over Arturo Gamez. His last appearance locally was in June of 2010 when as part of the first round of the “Guante Azteca (Aztec Glove)” regional tournament, he was defeated by Jesus Gurrola. In his thirty-two fight career, Tapia faced the likes of current lightweight champion Brandon Rios and up and coming prospects Carlos Molina and Antonio Orozco, going the distance against all of them. Recently, he was seen working the corner for many Tijuana amateur fighters as a trainer’s assistant.
