Time will put everything in its place, those are the words of one Antonio Margarito when referring the sudden coronation of Saul ‘Canelo” Alvarez as the WBC super welterweight champion.

Antonio "Tijuana Tornado" Margarito

The three time welterweight champion feels that Alvarez, a fighter who in the eyes of the “Tijuana Tornado” did not deserve the title shot, was able to conquer the green and gold belt.

“It is true what Jose Sulaiman said, that some of us weren’t available because of injuries,” Margarito recently stated. “Paul Williams, myself, but the way that he has been brought along is not right and with time, that will show.”

Margarito had to opportunity to capture said title last November but was not able to compete with the speed of Filipino congressman Manny Pacquiao and was defeated via unanimous decision.

“It is a posibility that he will do some optional defenses but sooner or later he has to face the ranked fighters and that is when we will see what he is made of,” the Tijuana native said.

World class fighters are listed in the top spots of the WBC super welterweight listings such as Margarito, former interim WBO champ Alfredo “Perro” Angulo, two-time world champion Paul Williams and former Olympian Vanes Martirosyan.

Margarito received the green light to begin training after his right eye surgery after his loss to Pacquiao and it is rumored that he will face Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto in a much anticipated rematch of their ’08 war.

  1. MAFIA, yes, Margo does and probably ALWAYS will take punishment better than Cotto. I’m not too sure if I want to be known for something like that further on down the line, 10 or 15 years from now.

Basically, the same that most are saying about Mosley now is the SAME thing most said before his fight with Margarito, too. Right? He WAS WRITTEN OFF by 90% of the fans. I could be wrong but I’m almost sure you wrote him off yourself, huh?

Margo is still formidable opposition vs fighters like Cotto, no doubt. Cotto fell short the first time around, close but NO CIGAR for Miguel.

Would I be surprised if Margo defeated him again?? ahhhh.. NO! I’d probably be a bit MORE surprised if Cotto won, although I consider him very able of defeating Margarito.

Like I said MAFIA, good debating with you. Saludos y respeto.

  2. Well EZ like like i already said, we can keep going and going but now at the present margarito has been taking the punches better than cotto. So well just have to wait and see. And the facts didnt come after the fight the were there before the fight.

  3. MAFIA Well, like I ALREADY said, I won’t go out on the limb to say that Margo cheated in the Cotto fight. Nobody knows for sure but there is PLENTY of room for reasonable doubt that he did. What I did say was that it wouldn’t surprise me mach if he actually did. Would it REALLY surprise YOU?? Do you completely dismiss the possibility?? If you were Cotto I’m sure you’d have some suspicions, wouldn’t you? I would. This isn’t a make believe world and as time eventually told us, we’re not dealing with a innocent group of guys, by NO means.

  4. Well u can dismiss it as a fantasy but u’ll also have to dismiss that marg cheated against cotto cause without proof thats all it is. I wonder why his uncle never spotted anything on the wraps or the commison. Good thing they were discovered on the Mosley fight and not the cotto.

  5. Facts?? hmmm.. With all due respects but.. why is it that these “FACTS” come up AFTER the fights occur and not BEFORE?? All everybody was saying then was how Margo was gonna beat and knock Mosley into retirement. Especially the Margo fans. That is FACT. There really were no weight rumors going around of any significance. That what you say might be true but AFTER THE FACT.

If your FACTS are FACTS would you then say that it might’ve been the reason why they tried to cheat, believing that Tony might be too weakened by making the weight??

I predicted a Mosley win on a couple of boxing sites like ESB basically because I felt that Cotto blew it and believed Mosley wouldn’t. I knew that Mosley would avoid the ropes and would clinch and hold more instead of trying to bounce around like Cotto did, conserving his energy. I knew that his faster hands would be be murder for Margo, combined with Antonio being a rather easy target and I said so under some harsh criticism. This is FACT too.

Do you believe that if Margo was allowed to come in a couple more pounds heavier he would’ve beaten Pacquiao?? Would you actually bet your hard earned cash if they would rematch at even odds?? Or.. what would do you think about Margo’s possibilities of winning a rematch with a couple of more pounds.
Personally I don’t believe it would make much of a difference at all, Pac would beat him up again. Tony “style” or lack of, is tailor made for Manny.

If Margo wouldn’t have been caught and suspended and would’ve been rematched with Mosley 5 months after their fight, would you eagerly bet on Margo at even odds?? Would the “facts” make Margo a favorite to win in your eyes?

Personally, I believe that if they would’ve fought 5 months later Mosley would’ve whipped him again. I’m talking about then, two years ago. Right now I wouldn’t be so sure. Mosley’s “tank” is not the same.

I’m not saying that Margo will lose to Cotto in a rematch. Honestly, I see this pretty much even, as I did three years ago, with a possible slight edge to Margo. I thought that Cotto was going to have enough left to outbox Margo for a close win, possibly 7-5 or even 8-4 in rounds or 115-113 or 116-112, with Margo desperately trying to kayo Cotto in the last couple of rounds.

One thing for sure, they BOTH haven’t been the same since. Everybody talks about the damage that Margo did to Cotto but… Margo took a lot of clean prime blows and kept coming and kept getting hit. Margo ability to take PUNISHMENT was a KEY to his victory, many don’t realize this and it might’ve taken a bigger toll on Margo that most want to believe. Cotto is not known for his ability to take punishment like Margo, quite the contrary. He doesn’t have a sturdy chin, as we all know. That is FACT. But the punishment that Margo received at the hands of Cotto might’ve been the beginning of the end for Boxing’s Iron man, Antonio Margarito.

MAFIA, saludos and good to trade opinions with you. Sorry for the long comment.

  6. Now the pac fight. Too fast why? He didnt go up to 151 pounds, fight night 144. Clottey fight 149… He realised his mistake thats why pac didnt go up on the margo fight. Why do u think he vacated the belt after the marg fight. All credit for pac but if he went up the result could have been different.

  7. These are all facts. He partyed at a hotel in san diego, he announced he was planning to take a year off ( that was in november), december pacman vs odlh, if u have the fight look before the fight starts the show marg on the sidelines, he looked the fattest i’ve seen him, a week later mosley challenges him, marg says no, mosley tells him pussy, marg says lets do it ( Big Mistake, not taking credit from mosley), fight night february 2 months away from the challenge, marg lost over 30 pounds in less than two months ( another mistake) the guy looks dehydrated on his inter views before the fight… U know the rest
    Facts.

  8. @EZ E
I didnt wat to go into details in tge mosley fight but here we go.
We know that the cotto fight gave margarito a lot of opportunities and his biggest payday. Now, his mexican and on the holidays. What do u think happend?

  9. MEXICAN MAFIA I see where you’re coming from. To be honest, I wasn’t too impressed with Cotto’s win over Mayorga either. It was an interesting and well hyped up fight due to Mayorga’s antics and his win over Yuri Foreman was a good win but not a great win, not like many try make it out to be. Mayorga allowed Cotto to fight at a fairly comfortable pace and didn’t press Cotto, didn’t force him to fight. And even still I believe Cotto did looked a bit winded in the 9th. Margo WON’T allow Cotto fight comfortably, he will press and press some more. Cotto will be forced to fight at Margo’s pace.

MAFIA, it’s no doubt that the Margarito fight took plenty out of Cotto. That we ALL know. The question that remains now is HOW MUCH did the Mosley fight, the inactivity and the Pacquiao beating take out of Margarito??

I won’t go out on the limb and say that Margo cheated in the Cotto fight but i don’t doubt it either and I don’t believe anyone should rule out the POSSIBILITY that he did. Common sense tells me that if he did it for Mosley, a fighter practically everybody thought that he’d win, then wouldn’t Margo’s team be temped to do it for what was then THEE MOST IMPORTANT FIGHT OF HIS LIFE?? His win over Cotto ‘MADE’ him, made him a TOP TIER p4p marketable fighter but… the DISGRACE of the Mosley fight, getting CAUGHT and then getting OUT CLASSED, getting WHIPPED and getting KNOCK OUT will be the “legacy” that will follow him to his grave. More will remember his shame than acknowledge his win over Cotto.

  10. I can keep going and going. But for now i think marg has been taking the punches better than cotto. I wasnt impresed with the mayorga or jew guy for some reason i forgot his name. I can still see margaritos motivation and since he just tasted the speed of the pacman, the cotto fight should be way easier.

  11. @Jay
Thats a good point of view. But since the begining i wasnt a fan of margarito because he was good but because he has balls to fight anybody and go forward.
About the cotto fight, i think it was legit, remember pacquiaos fight is the second for marg with a new trainer. Cotto just gave his best performance and failed. i remember right on the next day people said marg was on steroids,( puerto rican radio station actually lol).

  12. I’ll say this about margarito, He’s a good fighter but good is where I draw the line not great. I believe he use loaded gloves against Cotto. I also believe Cotto had a good game plan in that fight, the only thing he could have done better was to just stay off the ropes. You dont have to be Freddy Roach or Emmauel Stewart to figure out how to beat Margarito. He comes staight at you and stands there, hes very easy to hit. Cotto was not himself after the 6th round. Anyone that has seen him fight before new that. that fight was suspect and the mosely fight showed why it was suspect. I believe margarito did cheat, there is no question in my mind.

  13. @ Bori, yeah i’m a fan of his and as I said it’s pretty foolish to fully count him out. I’ll stick by that a lot of good fighters fell to Mosley and Pacquiao. They were ugly beatings but guys with great speed and boxing ability will make him look bad exactly what got him the fight with Pacquiao so he can make “history”. That’s what Cotto abandoned at the time of the first fight as I said he relied too much upon his power at the time and payed for it. He won’t make that mistake again especially with Steward in his corner. About the bum he fought we’re talking about a 14 month layoff there can you say ring-rust. As I said I expect him to put up a good fight I guess we’ll just wait and see. If I’m wrong I’ll admit it but I still think the man has something left.

  14. jonnyboy u gotta be kidding right??? u still think margo is good when he has looked horrible since the plasters came off…. he was t.k.o by mosley he went the distance with some bumb they picked up at a local bar and was sent to the operating room against pacman… but u say margo is still good??? well thats what u call a fan… evryone here is on the same page like u said Jay. i just know that u cant protect a belt fighting bumbs for to long because the fighter will loose value.. the fighter will never get to p.p.v status… i think canelo has alot of potential its just to soon for such a young fighter…..

  15. @ jerry dog, yeah he is still good, has anybody looked good against Pacquiao lately? No. I don’t believe he had loaded gloves in his fight with Cotto he had Cotto’s number. He walked through Cotto’s best shots at a time where he relied to much upon his power wore him down and went for the kill. Second time around I think Cotto has the edge after the beatings Margarito took from Mosley and Pacquiao but to fully count out Margarito is pretty dumb. All I can say is I predict another bloody war between two warriors and I can only say Cotto has the edge in my book especially with Steward in his corner I expect him to box and use his legs more.

  16. come on people is there people still out there that think the torrance tornado is good. once the plaster came off, he couldn’t beat someone he outweighed by twenty pounds.he needs to fight cotto again, this time in new york where cotto can have a little home court advantage. and this time he’ll gets his ass kicked big time.you know some of my homies still love the norteno raiders, even though they are the most sorry ass team in the world. anybody who thinks margarito is good needs to leave the tequila alone, and go to A.A.

  17. @EZ & Bori,
I couldn’t have said it better myself. Panchito Bojado was another youngster who crash landed very quickly. Let’s not even mention Pete Rademacher, he challenged for the heavyweight title in his pro debut and was retired within 6 years with 7 loses, 6 by knockout.

  18. Its not fair for margarito fighting pacquiao for that same belt and canelo fighting a tough nobody and winning that belt… but i see the scheme of the boxing association.

  19. They are trying to have more mexicans on different weight classes to attract more fans… Thats why they r not fighting each other… i dont think its because they dont want to but because now boxing its all about national rivalry, and they want to keep it that way to creat more profit.

  20. Everyones on the same page on this one. If chaves becomes champ I feel bad for him, which is what I said when canelo won his belt. I say that because now these boxing children now have bullseyes on their chests. If chaves wins these kids will have belts but like bori-4-life said, now the big dogs are going to come to get those belts. These poor kids are being groomed for the biggest beating of their lives. All the best middleweights are coming and these kids are going to wish they never became champions.

  21. @BORI 4 LIFE Yes, they GAVE him a title BUT he doesn’t have to protect it because Suliaman will be protecting it for him!! As we see, he’s already began, right? That will continue until the money is right enough to take the risk.

  22. @JESUS That’s EXACTLY what I mean. Suliaman counts on the average fight fan to buy into his garbage. He exploits the popularity and cheerleaders of fighters like Canelo and Chavez Jr and that’s basically enough to make these hyped up “events” money makers for promoters like Arum and Oscar and.. for HIMSELF/WBC. Yes, together they’re creating a large fan base for these fighters BUT.. they are making Canelo and Chavez Jr a lot of enemies that are hoping to see them get beat down, defeated and exposed. But then again, that’$ what $ell$ ticket$ and.. THAT’$ WHAT’$ IT’$ ALL ABOUT, right? It ISN’T about the fans themselves because they don’t care about the fans. IT’$ ABOUT THE FAN’$ MONEY !!

  23. i think what happened to vargas is gonna happen to canelo. to young to soon and his career is done. they gave him a title and he is gonna have to protect it from the big dogs

  24. I think we all know that Canelo is being brought up way to soon, but it is what it is. I strongly believe that the majority of us are looking forward to the Margarito/Cotto re-match. Whats going to happen in that one?

  25. Suliaman basically represents everything that’s WRONG with the sport we love. But.. this is nothing new and he ain’t done yet. Expect even bigger boxing ATROCITIES if Chavez Jr defeats Zbik. Get ready amigos… THE WORSE IT YET TO COME!!

  26. Margarito said exactly what I think, Canelo having that strap is only going to bring fights that he’s not ready for and somebody is going to beat him. He may be able to sell out arenas and get his fights on HBO but he’s far from a complete fighter and is being pushed faster then he should be.
