I am not the only one who couldn’t believe Nonito Donaire actually knocked the shit out of Fernando Montiel in two rounds. I was shocked to see Montiel lose in such fashion but this is boxing. The new unified bantamweight champion, Nonito Donaire, is itching to get back in the ring and rumor is he might be fighting on May 28th against Anselmo ‘Chemito’ Moreno in a unification clash in Donaire’s backyard of the San Francisco Bay Area. That area is home to one of the largest Filipino communities in the United States.

Moreno (30-1-1, 10 KOs), a 25-year-old southpaw from Panama, has defended his belt seven times. Moreno had a pending defense against Lorenzo Parra for April 30 in Panama or Venezuela but for various reasons has not been able to finalize this fight.

The knockout of Montiel made Donaire a super star overnight and broke into the top five on the pound-for-pound list with the victory.

What’s your opinion, is Donaire moving to fast?

  1. I give Donaire 5th p4p behind Marquez, Martinez, Mayweather and Pacqiuao. His boxing resume is much thinner when it comes to big name fights compared to the top four and that should be taken into consideration. I won’t deny Donaire can become top 3 (he’s defintily skilled enough to) but he needs a few more names on his win column. Moreno unfortuantly isn’t one of those names thats going to do Donaire any favors in P4P rankings. It looks like a guy who can’t hit and isn’t superior then Donaire in any department, safety fight? no just the poor guy that has a belt that Donaire wants since he wants to unify the division and I don’t see the winner of Mares/Agbeko giving him much trouble either so I feel he should move up a weight class. As I said we wont really see Donaire tested until he hits featherweight.

  2. I have watched several of Moreno fights and concluded that he is way down below the caliber of Nonito Jr. His style stinks. He could get KOed right on round 1 by the super ambidextrous Nonito.

  3. Donaire has knockout wins over Darchinyan and Montiel, two of top banatmweight out there. In my eyes this puts him way up there on the P4P lists. Some people call him #2, I would go there yet but he is most definitely top 5.

  4. I like the RING and rarely disagree with their P4P rankings but he hasn’t earned the right to move ahead of fighters that have proved more like Marquez and Martinez. I give him credit for taking out Montiel the way he did (ugly!) but not top 3 p4p just yet but that could happen in a couple more solid match ups and I don’t see Moreno posing much of a threat. I give Donaire this I don’t think theres a bantamweight that could beat him. I don’t see him having much trouble until he hits featherweight alot of potential threats and great match-ups for him to really shine and be in the top 3 p4p granted he hits no roadblocks in between that time as Edgar said “this is boxing”.
