Humberto Soto, who was scheduled to fight on May 7 against Urbano Antillon in a rematch as part the undercard for Pacquiao-Mosley, has canceled the fight. In a recent announcement by his attorney, Michael Miller, it was stated Soto is now a free agent. Miller was also the attorney for Nonito Donaire who also tried to separate from Top Rank but wasn’t successful.

Humberto Soto has left Top Rank and Zanfer Promotions with rumors circulating he signed a contract with Golden Boy Promotions, Top Rank’s worse enemy. Soto’s manager, Antonio Lozada is currently searching for a network to televise his next fight which might be late May or early June though an opponent hasn’t been announced. The Los Mochis, MX, resident currently holds the WBC lightweight title.

As for Antillon, rumor is he might face Brandon Rios on July 9th on Showtime.

It sucks that great fights are being canceled due to greediness of the promoters but karma can be your worse enemy too. Golden Boy is trying to keep Juan Manuel Marquez under its banner by offering him a possible July 28 fight against IBF jr welterweight champion Zab Judah or a clash with Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. No word if Marquez will continue with Golden Boy, but Oscar De La Hoya’s company has the right to match any offers Marquez gets until February 2012.

What’s your opinion, do you think these fighters are doing the right move by leaving their current promoters?

  1. Soto did the right move top rank is full of crooks. How is possible to have a rematch between antillon and soto, when soto beat the crap out of antillon clearly. antillon was throwing 5 low blows per round why? because he couldn’t beat soto period. Also antillon was supposed to fight vasquez before he would get another belt shot. bob arum is only putting fights to make him more money and not his fighters. soto did the right move good job buddy.

  2. humberto soto is running from urbano. urbano got robbed the last fight against humberto and now humberto knows fighting urbano is too risky. humberto is a champion now and he is making champion money. if he fights urbano’s chances are he will be stripped of his belt and will not make as much money any longer and will most likely lose the spot light and drop his rank to the bottom of the totem pole. lets keep it real, humberto soto is running from urbano antillon.

  3. Well, this is the business side of boxing. As a fan,I don’t like it. I hope he gets the money he wants which ever path he chooses. Being the warrior that he is, I hope people don’t think he didn’t want to risk his title against Urbano Antillon again.

  4. Well thats a blow to the ppv card, I also heard he wasn’t getting all the money he was entitled to for some fights (around $1 mil or so owed to him.) I’d be pissed off too if I wasn’t getting that kind of money that he’s earned. If he does sign with Golden Boy and Marquez/Judah falls through (and Marquez stays with GB) I would like to see Marquez/Soto. Kind of sucks that the Soto/Antillon fight’s cancelled, it was probably the best fight on the card. I swear i’m sick of the Golden Boy/Top Rank bullcrap, so many good fights could be made, the best could fight the best at the right time despite who promotes them. They have enough money as it is to stop worrying about their damn pockets and drop thier egos and give the sport what it needs and what the fans want to see and thats great fights. It would only make them more money because it will bring fans in like boxing used to have when compelling fights were happening regularly.
