After seeing Erik Morales in his spectacular performance against Marcos Maidana, many people are eyeing him as a competitive foe. One of them is Marco Antonio Barrera, a long time rival. In a recent interview by Ernest Gabion from BoxingScene, Barrera says his motivated to show he too has great fights left.

“In a way, yes. It makes me want to show what I can do as well. I believe I have a lot left and will show it once given the opportunity,” Barrera told Gabion.

Barrera also stated he will welcome a fourth battle with “El Terrible” but he really wants Juan Manuel Marquez.

“Seeing how Morales got into shape and has his weight under control, I would welcome a fourth fight with him. I think it would be like the past three we had together,” stated the former champion. “My desire is to fight Juan Manuel Marquez again and show him who the better fighter is. In Marquez’ heart he knows that fight could have gone either way and he needs to prove that he is better than me which I don’t think he is.”

During Barrera’s interview with Ernest, he also revealed that he is now a free agent as he left Golden Boy in good terms. So it’s very possible he could fight Morales or Marquez.

This is a controversial one but I don’t believe Barrera beat Erik Morales the second time around. When they first met in 2000, both Morales and Barrera were in their prime and it was a very close fight which Morales won a split decision. In there second encounter two years later I feel Morales was robbed and in 2004 I will lean towards the so-called “Baby Faced Assassin.”

Yet again, quite controversial. I don’t believe Barrera has any fuel left in him. Let me first say that if he does get a rematch with Marquez, the outcome won’t be any different. In his last fight Barrera had to bully a young kid with only 15 professional fights. A knock out was expected. I just don’t think his heart and pride is bigger than Morales.

What’s your opinion on Marco Antonio Barrera?

  1. Barrera and Moralez were great champs. The hearts these guys have are to of the biggest we will ever see in boxing. At this point I think they should keep their eyes on the prize, if they’re going to look for that fourth title then they should do what they came out of retirement to do. I think they should take fights that can get them to their goal. Pointless fights will just bring them alot more damage for no good reason. I’ll watch the show if they do fight of coures, as long as its not on ppv. But Jesus is right if its not getting them any closer to that forth title then they shouldnt bother taking unessesary punishment.

  2. how about a morales vs khan and barrera vs miguel vazquez…. khan is a champ and vazquez is fighting for an ibf title and has no fighter to fight with…. why not put barrera in that mix for that vacant ibf title

  3. I also agree with John…still I don’t think a forth fight can be made. First of all, Both fighters want that precious forth title and be the first Mexican to get it. Fighting each other does nothing to help that cause. Barrera has his eye on Brandon Rios and Morales has his eye on Marquez.
Even though both fighters are past their prime, (which they are)I think they both bing out the best in each other. Kinda like Ali and Frazier. Still the business side of boxing says ‘no way’. Don’t get me wrong, I would like to see a forth fight.

  4. @John you have a great point. WE dont know, I guess putting him back in the ring will answer our question.

  5. Just a month ago people were saying the same thing about Morales, he doesn’t have anything left, Looked washed up, etc. A warrior like Barrera needs motivation. Who knows how much Morales left in the ring, in his war against Maidana. It’s an old boxing axiom to never Judge a fighter by how good he looks in defeat.

  6. To be honest I agree with this article completely. Barrera is the most shot between him, Morales and Marquez and would lose to either one of them at this point in their careers. I think Morales would be competitive with Marquez but I think Marquez wins that encounter. I would like to see Morales/Barrera IV and I feel Morales wins that one and if Barrera does have anything left it will show in that fight due to their history I think they will both bring out the best of what they got left and at this point I feel Morales has more in him. I thought the second fight Morales won as well but thats in the past now. Barrera was a great fighter and can bring trouble for a lot unexperienced prospects but he just doesn’t have enough to hang with Morales or Marquez anymore.
