Detached Retina Could End Antonio Margarito’s Career

The plans of a summer fight between Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto is being flushed down the toilet. In a recent diagnostic, the “Tijuana Tornado” suffered a detached retina in addition to the broken orbital socket with the possibility of Margarito being forced to retire from boxing.

Margarito suffered the injury in his brutal loss to Manny Pacquiao last November causing the detached retina. The retina is a thin membrane of nerve tissue that lines the back of the eye. Retinal detachment occurs when the inner layer of the retina separates from the wall of the eye.

The nerve cells in the retina normally detect light entering the eye and send signals to the brain about what the eye sees. But when the retina detaches, it no longer works correctly. It can cause blurred and/or lost vision. Retinal detachment requires immediate medical care. If done soon enough, surgery can save from the injured person losing their vision.

Legendary “Sugar” Ray Leonard also suffered a detached retina back in the mid-1980s. He had a successful surgery on his eye and was able to continue his career. Maybe Margarito will be as fortunate.

Meanwhile, rumor is Miguel Cotto could be seeking a world title in a fourth weight division in October against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at a catch weight of 155 pounds. That’s if Chavez Jr. can beat the WBC middleweight champion Sebsatian Zbik on June 4 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

What’s your opinion? Should Margarito risk losing his vision?

  1. i’m so sorry about Margarito,, he is a fine and a good boxer!! Garcia would be the 1 responsible for this,,lets hope surgery will do good for Margarito,,

  2. I certainly hope that Margarito does not suffer any permanent eye injury or failure, I’d suggest he retire to assure his future health. I was a Margarito fan for many years, but unfortunately I will always now remember him as the fighter that would thoughtlessly cause possible serious injury, bordering on even death, to his fellow athletes by loading his gloves, and more-than-likely more than just the one time he got caught doing it. If you have ever done any ring fighting, of which I have along with also training fighters, and you’re a professional boxer that says that he has no idea that his hand wrapping is or was being “loaded”, then you’re either in a coma, or you’re lying, period ! I lost complete respect for this former champion, as far as I’m concerned he and his trainer should have been banned from boxing forever. This might seem old business now to some reading this but there should never be reprieve for a professional that has so little regard for his fellow athletes. If Margarito were to admit to his past illegal episodes and sincerely express his apologizes, then we can forgive him. From what I’ve heard from him, I don’t think he ever will confess the truth. So personally as I said, I hope that he sustains no permanent eye injury, but he should have never been allowed to compete again in the first place. Retire Antonio, and give some great thought to what you did, and knew full-well what you were doing. A truly great fighter doesn’t have to cheat by risking the lives of his fellow athletes in order to be successful. Disgraceful.

  3. This is not what we expected. Now, I agree that the trainer, in this case Robert Garcia, should protect the fighter BUT.. at the same time the trainer is an EMPLOYEE of the fighter. When we get right down to it, Margarito ISN’T Garcia’s fighter, Margartito is Garcia’s BOSS. The BOSS calls the shots. I wouldn’t be the least surprised that if one of the conditions THE BOSS laid down when he HIRED his trainer was that he NOT stop the fight, any fight, without the approval of the BOSS/FIGHTER and Garcia probably respected and accepted. Having trained fighters in the past, like my dad and uncle before me, I believe that Garcia probably wanted to stop it but.. couldn’t for the reasons I already stated. These fighter/trainer ‘agreements’ are nothing new, I’ve seen it before, personally.

No, it’s not wise nor do I readily agree BUT I do understand. It’s more “Macho” than anything else. The kind of “Macho” that one can expect from a fighter like Margarito, known for his ability to absorb punishment, “suck it up” and be the “Last Man Standing” with his hand eventually raised in victory. His trademark, one that has brought him FAME and FORTUNE.

In my estimation the ref Lawrence Cole, a long time ring official who UNDOUBTEDLY knows the type of warrior Margarito always has been in the past, should’ve stopped before the fight even entered the championship rounds. With the punishment Margarito was receiving and absorbing he didn’t need the fight doctor’s approval. It’s his JOB and RESPONSIBILITY to save fighters like Margarito from THEMSELVES!!

What we don’t know yet if this will be the end of the line for Margo. His “legacy’ tarnished, but a WARRIOR to the end.

  4. Garcia is responsible for Margarito’s injury .That is the bottom line and anyone is disputing this is needs to have his brain checked by a specialist .
Garcia was aspiring fame and reputation but unfortunately his fighter was the victim of this aspiration .
Garcia is an egoist who doesn’t care if his fighter gets hurt or even die .

  5. I think if anyone wants to point a finger they should probably point those fingers at Garcia & Margarito him self. Garcia could’ve stopped the fight at anytime and Margarito was asked many times by the Doc. if he could see and if he wanted to continue. Margarito kept saying yes despite the swelling and the massive cut. Garcia & Margarito could have stopped the punishment at anytime during the fight. This really sucks for him, I hope he can heal up well. All that pride got the best of him this time, he should’ve known when to call it quits.

I hear you Edgar I really wanted to see that rematch too.

  6. If there is one person to blame on Margarito’s condition, it was Mr. Laurence Cole Jr., the third man in the ring between Pac-man and the Tornado. He allowed the slaughter to continue despite seeing that the Tornado could no longer defend himself. What a bum referee, putting the lives of boxers in great danger when he should be the one to intercede for their safety. He should be banned from refereeing again in order to protect other boxers from suffering the same fate as Margarito. Poor Margarito!!! Shame on you Mr. Cole Jr.!!!

  7. Lets focus on the future…Margarito should heal 100% before he can even spar. Hopefully its a speedy recovery. A tune up fight wouldn’t hurt either. I’d hate to bring ring rust into the ring against Cotto.

  8. I blame Robert Garcia for Margarito’s misfortune .Robert should have stopped the fight instead of exposing his fighter to unnecessary punches .Garcia’s selfishness and pride ensued adversity upon his fighter .
Garcia is an absolute idiot because the outcomes of the fight was implicitly obvious .
Margarito is one of my favorites fighters and I am really enraged by this tiding because Garcia could eschewed hurting Margarito by simply throwing a fucking towel .
Boxing is very fatal sport and Garcia should be cognizant of this because he is a trainer.
I am very saddened by this news and I really hope to see Margarito fighting again .I also wish him a quick convalescence .
Garcia you are the epitome of fatuousness and selfishness .

  9. Damn that was one of the fights I was really looking foward to, bad news to hear but wish Margarito the best through whatever happens. Either way with something like that even with successful surgery I hope he just retires instead of continuing and going blind in the process.
