Pacquiao’s next opponent could be Juan Manuel Marquez who has accepted a second proposal for a November 12th fight in Las Vegas at a catch weight of 144lbs. Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title will be on the line. The second proposal was a guaranteed 5 million dollars. The same amount Shane Mosley got last week. According to Mosley’s Nevada contract, his purse was $3.95 million but he is guaranteed at least $5 million because of expected pay-per-view sales. 5 million is a lot of money considering the purses for the televised undercard during the Mosley-Pacquiao fight. Kelly Pavlik ($270,000), Alfonso Lopez ($40,000), Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. ($165,000), Jorge Arce ($125,000), Mike Alvarado ($50,000) and Ray Narh ($22,500).

Making Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 is no longer an issue as Top Rank is planning to make an official announcement in the upcoming days. the problem is that Juan Manuel Marquez wants to rid himself of ring rust by taking on David Diaz 5 months before colliding with Pacquiao. July 2nd is the set date for the tune up fight which might take place at the Arena Mexico, El Palacio de los Deportes or The Foro Sol.

David Diaz is a former WBC lightweight champion who originally retired Erik Morales, this is no tune up. Marquez will be playing with fire and taking a huge risk. What if Marquez gets cut, twists an ankle or comes up with a training injury which forces Marquez to pull from fighting Pacquiao?

Sometimes I think Golden Boy is behind all this. Golden Boy has a right to match the $5 million offer and has signaled that they may put Marquez in with WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz.

My opinion, Ortiz is not near Pacquiao’s popularly level nor is half a million dollars worth risking the millions your being guaranteed.

So what’s your opinion, should Marquez take a tune up fight? Considering he hasn’t fought and keep in mind that the revised contract with Pacquiao has a $10 million dollar rematch clause should Marquez upset Pacquiao.

  1. JMM will win over Diaz without an iota of doubt, however,it is going to be a challenging tune-up fight for JMM.Put your money on JMM.

  2. David Diaz is no push over and not the best opponent if you want a tune-up fight because he isn’t going to see himself as a tune-up he’s going to come to win. He should fight somebody who is a 140 pounder but not any of the big names in the division so he can adjust to fighting at a heavier weight because Pacquiao’s camp isn’t going to budge on the weight as much as we want to see a fair fight they just want to collect another paycheck with as little risk as possible. It’s going to be interesting to see the Diaz fight but I just think he should have taken a less high risk opponent. No doubt Marquez will come to fight come when he meets Pacquiao I just hope he can pull off the upset and beat Pacquiao’s camp at their own game. Highly unlikely but I’ll be behind Marquez 100% when the fight comes around.

  3. I actually think a tune up fight does him good. Marquez has gotten cut before. Big deal. Even if he looses, that doesn’t do away with the fight vs Pacquiao. The Katsidis fight was back in November so if he doesn’t fight in July, then he’d be out of the ring for one whole year. I can think of better opponents to fight after a one year lay off than Pacquiao. I insist it’s got to be at 140 lbs for it to be on a level playing field. Either way, Marquez comes to fight, not like Clottey and Mosley, among others.
