As TMZ first reported, De La Hoya entered a rehab facility a few weeks ago for substance abuse issues. A source close Golden Boy said “voluntarily commenced proactive treatment to address certain health and personal issues.”

“After doing an honest evaluation of myself, I recognize that there are certain issues that I need to work on. Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws,” Oscar De La Hoya told TMZ.

“Throughout my career and my life, I have always met all challenges head-on, and this is no different. I am confident that with the support of my family and friends, I will become a stronger, healthier person.

“I ask for respect and privacy as my family and I go through this process.”

About a week ago De La Hoya posted a flurry of very introspective tweets in the past few days, including, “Take a deep breathe and let out all that anger that makes you hate. it really is going to be o.k.”  and “Stop finding excuses not to live. life is controlled by what you make of it and not of what it makes of you.”

De La Hoya also posted some very random picture of himself no word if the pictures where taken during his stay at the rehab.

Update on Oscar De La Hoya

Oscar voluntarily checked himself into a $77,000 a month treatment facility in Malibu, California since May 7. Oscar De La Hoya began drinking and using cocaine, which then caused him to have infidelity problems in his marriage.

De La Hoya retired in April of 2009 and last fought in Dec. of 2008 against Manny Pacquaio. It could be the way he went out as a possible reason for De La Hoya’s struggles? Who knows.

  1. Wish the best for Oscar .he is a legend in and out the ring .he has the courage to reveal his weakness .
I really do not know why some people accuse him with of being gay or whatever .it is a shame to accuse someone with something without have proofs to back it up .
It is fucking simple the guy is a handsome man that is all to it .Does that make him gay .come on people stop with jealousy and stop spreading malicious rumors.haters .Actually I personally believe that any man accuses other man of being gay is trying to cover his tendency to disks .

  2. Wish Oscar the best, he’s a strong-willed champion who will overcome this. Biggest step is recognizing your problem and having the courage to admit it and do something about it. This is no doubt a bout he can win, it’s good he decided to do this before it’s too late and wish him nothing but the best in his road to recovery.

  3. @ Edgar Muchas Gracias for that. Unfortunately none of us are exempt these type of problems, whether directly or indirectly.

Oscar has overcome the odds in the past and has been a credit to our sport, even if I/we’ve occasionally disagreed with him throughout the various stages of his boxing life as fighter and/or promoter, but a credit nonetheless.

  4. @ez E glad to hear that, good for you! It takes A Real man to admit he has a problem.

And a real champ to over come it.

  5. Whatever the problem… I wish him well and another BIG victory. I had my own ’bouts” with drugs and alcohol. Terrible ones. Almost destroyed me and the ones that loved me most. It was a long road back, for some it takes longer than others. I’m sure we ALL have a family member that has suffered similar circumstances, maybe some still are. The important thing is the will to “fight back” and not give up. Many times I wanted to, sometimes did. Hit rock bottom but.. it was there, at ‘rock bottom’, that I regrouped and fought back, for myself, my family, my dignity and for my VICTORY! For a while I was considered a LOSER, and rightfully so. NINETY FIVE PERCENT of the people that THOUGHT they knew me said that I’d never recover. BUT… those NINETY FIVE percent were WRONG, thank God and the will to get it together and FIGHT BACK. Since then I’ve been on a WINNING STREAK!! A very long one. How long?? Well.. so long that most don’t even remember it anymore. Many of those that openly criticized me died with their livers destroyed, others of overdoses of pills or drugs. Some are “legally” hooked to perscription drugs. Some of those same “NINETY FIVE PERCENT” I’ve personally taken to the same rehab that I checked in to, where I’ve been employed for close to two decades. Many of them have now stated winning streaks of their own!! Good for them, good for me and hopefully… GOOD FOR OSCAR!!

Com’on Oscar!! You can do it!! You were destined to WIN, you KNOW the taste of VICTORY, right?? We’ll, it time to get the ‘taste’ back. Happiness is not only a feeling, IT’S ALSO A FLAVOR!!
