WBC Super Welterweight World Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez poses on June 10, 2011 in Los Angeles, California during a media workout in preparation for his June 18, 2011 title defense against top rated contender Ryan Rhodes at Arena Vicente Fernandez in Guadalajara, Mexico which will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark in the United States and Televisa in Mexico.

This is what Canelo had to say:

CANELO ALVAREZ, WBC Super Welterweight World Champion

“Oscar de la Hoya recommended I train in Big Bear and I really liked it. It was a really good place to train. I could really focus up there with no distractions.”

“Training camp went by really fast because I love my job. At times training at home is a distraction, so training in Big Bear was a really good change. I had a good camp.”

“It took me about 10 to 15 days to get used to the altitude. It was really hard to breathe, a 25 minute run felt like an hour.”

“Rhodes is a strong fighter and is going to be tough. He can take a good punch and he’s awkward because he can switch hit.”

“I want to give Jalisco the best ‘Canelo’ I can. I’m excited to defend my title in Guadalajara in front of my people.”

“I consider it an honor to be compared to the ‘Golden Boy’ but I obviously have my mind set to accomplish much more. Records are made to be broken and that is my goal.”

“My goal is to be the best fighter. To be the best, you have to challenge the best, and I think I could be ready for Pacquiao in a year.”

JOSE “CHEPO” REYNOSO, Alavarez’s Manager and Trainer

“I liked having training camp in Big Bear. It was really good preparation and we had an intense camp. You can tell he’s really confident and focused right now.”

“We are all very excited to return to Mexico. We are ready to be there and fight in front of our people.”

“We didn’t do anything else besides train, watch film of Rhodes and watch movies. We rented over 105 movies.”

“Rhodes is a complicated fighter. He switches hands and is very strong. We worked hard to overcome that.”

EDDY REYNOSO, Alvarez’s Manager and Trainer

“Camp was really good and the challenge of dealing with the altitude made it a more intense camp, but ultimately the challenge made it more rewarding.”

“We implemented a lot of exercises that really increased the velocity of his punches. We also worked a lot to improve his defense.”

“We sparred over 100 rounds and trained really hard.”

  1. I AGREE NOT BEING BIAS THIS KID HAS A TALENT..BASE ON HIS RECORD REMEMBER HIS NOT A P4P BUT A SUPER WELTER CHAMP..AND A BIGGER WEIGHT THAN PACQUAIO BUT PACQUAIO NAME IS NOT AN ORDINARY NAME TO BEAT…IF NOT ALVAREZ IT WOULD BE BRADLEY

  2. IT IS ONLY WEATHER WHO WONT FIGHT BIGGER SOUTH PAW BOXERS LIKE COTTO ,MARGARITO AND MARTINEZ ALSO ALVAREZ BUT PACQUAIO IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT AND THEY WILL STEP ON 147 LBS HE SAID HE WILL FIGHT ANYONE…BUT MARTINEZ SAID HE WILL NOT GO DOWN PACQUAIO SHOULD/

  3. if not because of big money offered to pacman he will not fight this kid…he probably chooses bradley….but im sure he accept the money and fight AT 147LBS…..KID YOUR DEAD AT 147

  4. Canelo is a beast manny and Floyd would never fight him because they would get rocked. This kid fights like a seasoned fighter and he is only 21 … Say what you want but he is the next big thing…

  5. I think he means 1 yr of dreamng to face pacqiuao. He hasnt proven himself yet by facing big names in his wt division

  6. @MexicanMafia he would need to fight significant people within a year I don’t see much speculation in what I said. I feel I didn’t have to include the year talk because he still hasn’t fought anybody significant so he fights Rhodes and the way most Boxers work these days he would probably get one ranked name under him. I don’t see room for much improvement when he’s fighting naturally smaller guys or guys who are simply aged. I like the kid and he will be great but a year is not enough time he at least needs two, and as Jesus said he needs quality opposition.

  7. he can think all he wants… this kid still needs to fight some good fighters not old guys moving up in weight… he just won a title so he is prey…. you will have all the top dogs calling him out.. i like canelo i just hope he knows what he just got into by winning this title without being ready

  8. Canelo must beat at least two top ten ranked fighters before he can even think about being ready in one year for Pacquiao. Fighters like Alfredo Angulo and Paul Williams come to mind when I say top ten guys.

read what the article says… he said he thinks he’ll be rdy in a year, we still don’t know how and if he’ll be rdy in a year. Pls Don’t start giving speculations! thanks!.

  10. @ Joe Joe I think Manny would be giving him major problems, this kid is still growing in the ring remember that. If the Cotto (the lesser talented one) can rock him I can’t imagine what Manny would do to him.
