The Media tour which began in New York on Tuesday to promote “Star Power: Mayweather vs. Ortiz” came to an end at the Nokia Plaza at L.A. Live on Wednesday night. Hundreds of boxing fans waited to catch a glimpse of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Victor Ortiz. Most of them were loud and proud Ortiz supporters.
The twenty-four-year-old “Vicious” Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22KOs) will defend his title versus the undefeated Floyd Mayweather after his all out war with Andre Berto. During their 12-round battle, he was able to send Berto to the canvas in round one to get off the canvas himself in the second round and survived a knockdown in the sixth round only to come back and drop Berto for the second time and win the welterweight championship. His sensational win over Berto made him a rising star over night.
“I am going to show you all how I roll,” said Ortiz. “I am going knock this dude out or if he wants to box, I am going to box him. If he wants to dance, we will dance and at the same time I am getting sick and tired of everyone saying he is going to fight Pacquiao next. No, he is fighting me ‘Vicious’ Victor Ortiz.”
During their first press conference held in New York, Ortiz was very calm and respectful but last night Ortiz changed his character from Mr. Nice Guy to Mr. Self Confidence. During the face off with Mayweather, Ortiz was exchanging shoves and running his mouth only to be pulled away as things got rowdy.
“I’m supposed to be a piece of nothing, I’m not supposed to be here, according to the statistics,” said Ortiz, whose parents abandoned him when he was 12 years-old forcing him and his five siblings to live in foster care. Resilient and determined to make something of his life, Ortiz found salvation in the ring and saw boxing as a way towards future success. “I’m tired of, ‘You can’t do this, you can’t do that.'”
“On September 17 the same thing will occur what happened September 17, 1985, when Julio Cesar Chavez knocked out Roger Mayweather, this one is for the Mexican fans,” stated an enthusiastic Victor Ortiz.
Right now Ortiz is a 7-1 underdog. Ortiz said he doesn’t mind that people want to talk about Pacquiao even if that person is Mayweather because he’s staring at the opportunity of a lifetime but finds it disrespectful that Mayweather continues to talk about Pacquiao.
“It’s a slap in the face to talk about Manny Pacquiao at this press conference. If he’s overlooking me, he’s got a problem. He’s got to fight me first and I was born for this moment. Nobody ever game me a chance to get to this position but now I’m here and I’m taking it by the horns,” added Ortiz.
Floyd Mayweather did announce that, “Pacquiao is next.”
“I want to fight the best they got out there, not just him, the best they got out there,” Mayweather said, “and if he’s on the list as one of the best guys, then absolutely.”
And though the press conference was to promote pay-per-view between Mayweather and Ortiz the media was more interested about what Floyd had to say about Congressman Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao has a pending defamation lawsuit alleging Mayweather unfairly accused him of using performance-enhancing drugs.
“I’ve never said that Manny Pacquiao was taking steroids, I never said he was taking enhancement drugs,” said Mayweather, who failed to turn up for a court-ordered deposition in Las Vegas earlier this month involving the defamation suit.
U.S. District Court Judge Larry R. Hicks denied the Emergency Appeal filed by Floyd Mayweather, Jr. for a protective order to prevent his court-ordered deposition, finding that Mayweather’s motion was, “without merit.”
Unlike Manny Pacquiao who refuses to take random blood and urine testing, both Mayweather and Ortiz have agreed to drug testing under the U.S. Anti Doping Agency (USADA) protocol for this bout.
Mayweather said Ortiz’s style and relative inexperience should make for an entertaining fight when the two meet at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 17.

This is definitely a great fight .
This fight is certainly much better than any of Pacquiao’s last three thats for sure. If they can add Morales and Canelo to the card that just makes this PPV so much better and worth every penny. I see Floyd winning but I won’t completely rule out a Ortiz shocker.
I don’t know why people bitch so much…this is not a bad fight.
