Saturday night at the Aviator Sports and Recreation Complex in Brooklyn, New York Broadway Boxing held another successful fight card as 4 of the 5 fights of the evening ended with a Knockout or TKO.

In the main event Gabriel “Tito” Bracero knocked out 8-6 Danie Van Standen with a hard right hook in the 3RD round to move his record to 17-0 with 3 KO’s. Early on Bracero’sstraight right hand was catching the over matched Van Standenalmost at will-Bracero Dropped Van Standen in the 2nd round and then continued his dominance as he caught Van Standen in the Corner which ultimately lead to his Knockout in the 3rd. It was a perfect hook that caught the already tired and hurt VanStanden and sent him to the canvas. Van Standen would lay there for a couple of minutes before he was able to get up on his own and walk around the ring before leaving the ring all together. This is the 2nd Knockout in a row for Bracero who isn’t known to be a knockout artist as this was his third in 17 tries. Lou Dibella, Bracero’s manager looked pleased with the outcome and fans should expect to see him once again on the next Broadway show in the coming months. As for Bracer becoming a contender, that’s up to his team to gauge where he stands on a national level, while he seems comfortable in his own backyard, becoming a contender and fighting outside on New York will work itself out, as for now, it’s safe to say he would be a fringe contender. If he continues to improve, perhaps by the end of next summer he can make a move onto bigger and more dangerous opposition.

The undercard was entertaining with all but the Women’s fight being stopped within 5 rounds. Seanie Monaghan of Long Beach NY upped his record to 8-0 defeating Brian Bernard of St Joseph MO in the 1st round also Jonathan Cepeda of West Palm FL beat Rhaman Yusubov by a 5th round stoppage. This fight had well back and forth action with Yusubov taking a good amount of punishment before finally getting stopped in the 5th.

Joe Smith JR whom many at the fights were high on scored a 2nd round stoppage to move his record to 7-1 and in the opening fight Travis Peterkin of Brooklyn scored a 1st round stoppage against the over matched Damion Reed of North Carolina.
The Womens bout between New York title holder Melissa McMorrow of San Carlos CA vs Keisher McLeod-Wells of New York, NY was the only bout to go the distance. McMorrow pulled out a gutsy Split Decision to retain her New York Flyweight title. The smaller McMorrow gave up considerable height and reach against the lanky McLeod-Wells who used good movement and a peppering jab to try and contain the aggressive McMorrow who had a little bit of a challenge getting in close to the taller fighter. I had the fight a draw, as I felt Mcleod-Wells fought well the first five rounds but lost steam in the last 3. McMorrow kept pressing forward and made every effort to get inside on McLeod and found success in the later rounds. Judges cards read 78-74 McLeod-Wells and 77-75, 78 -74 for McMorrow.

And then…

Earlier in the day I was able to catch a Yankees game in the Bronx. I must say, Yankee Stadium was unimpressive. It was not fan friendly and lacked charm, the tunnels that separated the fans from the field while walking to certain seat sections made the stadium feel cold and very shelter like. However with that being said, I now can say I’ve been to Yankee Stadium. For whatever that’s worth.

Mike Alvarado(L) knocks down former Mexican champion Gabriel Martinez(R) in round one enroute to scoring a 10-round unanimous decision to remain undefeated at 31-0, and win the IBF Latino belt Saturday at the Softball Country Arena in Denver,Co. Photo by Chris Farina - Top Rank

I hate Toll roads, and NYC had plenty of them, lesson learned- If and when I drive back into NYC, I need to bring cash just for tolls. Talk about a pain in the backside.
Mike Alvarado gave up his WBC belt before his fight on Saturday night in Denver, Colorado. Alvarado mentioned that he was getting ranked lower each month by the WBC and saw no reason to pay the sanctioning fees for winning and getting a lower ranking. While this may sound as if Alvarado is doing the right thing, I personally feel it’s contrived. Alvarado received more press by giving up the belt than he did when he held the belt, albeit he only had it since May, its feels manufactured. Top Rank and his team are smart enough to realize what’s going on. Alvarado is 31, there should be a sense of urgency in getting him a title shot or the next fight should be for a title shot. I have a feeling fans may see him back on the Pacquiao undercard.

  1. Yeah… okay, but…WHEN is he FINALLY to tp stop fighting MISMATCHED SET-UPS?? Com’on man, we have enough set up “killers” already. Guys like Bracero and Shawn Estrada are wearing me out. When their fights are announced I really couldn’t care less and won’t until they’re FINALLY match with an opponent that has AT LEAST a 10% percent chance of winning.
