Let’s Talk Some Boxing

Who else is bummed that Robert Guerrero injured his shoulder and his fight with Marcos Maidana is off? A highly anticipated fight that was bound to have been a classic, considering “The Ghost” is a quick fighter and Maidana is all heart and action, was recently cancelled due to a sparring injury. Who else is disgusted with Amir Khan’s talk about Guerrero being paid step aside money and his constant antics belittling Maidana? As one who does not support Khan but does respect his unbelievable talent, I am not a fan for his constant trash talk in fights that do not regard him. Yes, he does fight whoever is put in front of him and spars with pound for pound king Manny Pacquaio, but Khan is beatable, even with his increasingly impressive skills and record. A current star and future superstar, please pay your respects to other top dogs in the division unless you have a plan on fighting them (again?).

With this unbelievable fight off, let’s take a look at the great heavyweight matchups going on in Europe. Alexander Povetkin fights veteran Ruslan Chageav. Povetkin, whom shows promise as a heavyweight if he is to become more active, will take on Chageav for a chance to move closer to fighting a Klistchko (even though he had the opportunity).Ruslan has already lost to Wladimir and is Povetkin’s biggest test yet.

Also on the card, an even more intriguing bout is between the hot prospect, Robert Helenius and former champ Sergei Liakhovich. Helenius is best known for his

impressive knockout of Samuel Peters. Liakhovich was the champ but after over a years layoff, who knows what form of competition and skills he will bring to the fight. A game Liakhovich with an impressive win definitely will bring light into a relatively one sided heavyweight division. Even with a win, Helenius still needs time before being a considered a serious contender. If he defeats Liakhovich he will have impressive names on his resume, but will he be ready to challenge a Klistchko? I think not, not yet at least.

As we mourn the loss of the Maidana-Guerrero fight, let’s look for the silver lining in the possibility of two strong, emerging, significant heavyweight contenders.

  1. This is the first I’ve heard about the fight being off and I got to say I,m pretty bummed out about it too. I was looking forward to this fight. I like both fighters and I really wanted to see who came out on top (this sucks). Hope Guerrero heals up well.

  2. I was pretty disgusted with Khan’s comments myself, he has no business smearing Maidana and insulting Guerrero the way he did I don’t think The Ghost can be bought like that and I think Maidana has more self-respect than that. This is what I been talking about if he kept his mouth shut I would actually like Khan but he continuously runs his mouth. No denying the guy has talent but he needs to know when to shut up. I was looking forward to that fight so much as I like both Maidana and Guerrero and am still bummed about it. I know The Ghost will be back and hopefully the fight is rescheduled. I want to see Guerrero and Khan go at it afterwards I would certainly be backing Guerrero in that match-up but my gut tells me Khan will prove too big but I think it would be a solid Boxing match that I think both men certainly have the tools to win it but I want to see how Guerrero does against on of the other top dogs in the division first. As for Povetkin and Helenius I think the Klits. bros. will be retired by the time these two are ready for those fights. However I think Adamek will bother Vitali and I think a possible upset can take place in that fight. He certainly wont bust a Haye on us that’s for sure.
