After a disappointing outcome to the Bernard Hopkins-Chad Dawson bout, the world has had time to reflect. A fight that should have been ruled a no contest was poorly ruled a TKO win for Dawson. Hopkins who often leans on opponents, holds, pot-shots and fights physically was draped over Chad, whom had just dodged a punch started the beginning of a terrible end. As Hopkins leaned over Chad, Chad lifted Bernard, grabbed his leg and performed a retro Goldberg like “spear” to deposit Hopkins on the canvas. Bernard dislocated part of his shoulder. Chad began to yell untrue obscenities about the 46-year old.

This was not a classy performance or win for Chad. Chad did not look fantastic. Neither did Bernard. Both of them did not have the time to begin using their hard work and game plans. A poor move by the referee gave Dawson the undeserved TKO win. Bernard, whom is famous for a one armed victory in the past, never quit himself but was stopped by the referee. Bernard would have fought through the pain. Chad went about calling himself a champion and Bernard a quitter.

Bernard has a history of exaggeration, but it never caused him to quit a fight. Bernard is one mentally and physically tough man. Chad is a very good boxer but in no way paid enough dues in the fight game to disrespect Bernard in that fashion.

Chad is undeniable an incredible boxer. Would he have beaten Hopkins? Who knows? Does he deserve to feel like he beat an all-time great? Personally, I believe not. The fight should have been a no contest. A terrible ending and an even worse call to finish off the night. Had the fight been ruled a no contest, we would have still been a stinker but the fans would be happier.

Now that Chad is champion, let’s see what he does with it. Will he fight Pascal again or unify with Tavoris Cloud? Let us hope he takes on one of those challenges to redeem himself from the performance displayed on Saturday.

  1. Noone is going to pay to see Dawson fight anyone. This whole thing is on Chad, he acted like an idiot and robbed the fans of a good fight. I honestly think he was intimidated so got carried away with his aggresiveness. I think the way he acted was distasteful.

  2. I still believe that a TKO win for Dawson is the right call. Pat Russell has to determine that some sort of foul was commited to ruile otherwise. He didn’t ! Bad call ?? YES, but it’s the correct one. He simply didn’t see it. He has admited that already. If a fighter is accidently injured and can’t continue afterwards, then he looses by TKO. Pat Russell doesn’t have the benefit of replay with the several camera angles that those of us watching on TV did. You can’t throw in the yellow flag and challenge as in football. The commision will certainly review the whole thing and maybe reverse the decision ( as it should be ). Given the circumstances, the TKO victory for Dawson (for the time being) is the correct one.
Does anyone remember the the Cintron vs Williams fight ? Cintron went flying through ther ropes and accidently landed on press row. HE LOST BY TKO even though we were still within 4 rounds. The same circumstances here. That is why Dawson winning by TKO is the correct call.
