Miguel Cotto has showed his True Colors

After the Manny Pacquiao – Juan Manuel Marquez controversial fight Saturday night, HBO aired the Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito Face Off with Max Kellerman.

The “Face Off” is a gripping interview session in which the two fighters face-off and answer Kellerman’s questions. The fighters also get the chance to address each other before there fight.

In this face off, Miguel Cotto showed a different side of him I never seen before as he continued to assume Margarito used illegal hand wraps during their first encounter which took place July 2008 in Las Vegas. Cotto brought out an iPad to show a picture of Margarito’s hand wrap used during their bout and allege the wrap was tampered with.

Perceptions of that fight changed radically for many, including Cotto, when in Margarito’s following fight against Shane Mosley in January 2009, he was caught trying to enter the ring with hand wraps coated in a plaster-like substance. Margarito blamed former trainer Javier Capetillo for inserting the illegal pads without his knowledge, was later suspended by the California commission for the funky wraps and did not fight for 16 months.

His fight with Cotto scheduled for December 3rd is in jeopardy as the New York commission is debating to allow Margarito to fight at the Madison Square Garden. Bob Arum ensures everything is still in order.

Margarito, who will be fighting for the first time since suffering a serious eye injury in a 12-round thrashing at the hands of Manny Pacquiao in November, has stated his willing to die in the ring.

Unlike Cotto, he stated during the Face Off that his health is more important and that he’s not doing this for his fans.

“My health is the most important in my life,” Cotto tells Max. “You’re going to the die in the ring, for what? I have 4 kids, beautiful family, its just my job.”

“Why I am going to exposure my life, health for what? For the fans for the people? Not my health my kids my family who’s going to take care of them no one just me.”

Though Cotto may have a point, he’s basically saying that if he’s losing the fight, he will not risk his life and most likely give up because his health is more important.

This is the same crap Victor Ortiz said after his fight with Marcos Maidana and look how it’s been haunting him. He lost the respect of many boxing fans.

I am reading between the lines and that’s what I understood. I am sorry but you’re getting paid good money to risk your health. Cotto is making $5 million plus a percentage of the pay-per-view profits which is more than enough to take care of his family if God forbid something bad happens.

The only person sounding stupid is Cotto bringing the whole hand wraps issue. Looking on the above picture against Manny Pacquiao, are you going to tell me Manny used illegal hand wraps? Are you going to tell me Margarito used some kind of plaster on his face to sustain those power shots from Cotto and Pacquiao?

Margarito has proved that his heart and pride is much stronger than any plasters and that is something you can take away from him and Miguel Cotto should man up and do his talking in the ring.

What is your take on Cotto?

  1. MAFIA Well, your NON-answer says enough. Instead of answering like a man, YOU QUIT ON ME, this time YOU TOOK A KNEE!! Does that mean that now UR MY Bit**h?? Yeah?? hahahaha LOLOLOL

  2. wow wow wow, take it easy there sport, you’re going to have a heart attack lol. There’s a saying, don’t throw rocks at somebody when you live in a glass house. Have a good day. Gotta go for a run.
Why don’t you just take the time and write me another paragraph lol.

  3. ahhhh.. “I’m ur bit*h”?? hmmm…. Your “logic” seems to fade into just plain fanatic cheerleading. Cotto knew he was finished. He could’ve stayed on his stool but yet decided to give it one more try. He later realized that he didn’t have the energy anymore to keep Margo off him. Didn’t he take enough punishment?? No, wait a minute, YOU probably was so full of HATE and RAGE that you probably would’ve preferred that Cotto leave the ring on a stretcher or seriously or permanently injured or dead huh?? Wow!! “Good” for you!! Way to go there, tough guy. Did you get mad at Pacquiao when he held back on Margarito in the final rounds or would’ve you preferred it if Pacquiao would’ve stepped it up a notch and sent Tony to the hospital with a career ending injury or permanent damage??

Look man, I’ve seen how you wildly praise Erik “El Terrible” Morales. Do you remember how he just plain REFUSED to get up in the THIRD round in his final fight vs Pacquiao?? Or are you in deep denial and are making believe that it never happened?? Morales had taken very little punishment, especially compared to Cotto. The punches that put him down for the final time barley hit him. He quit, plain and simple. ANSWER THIS ONE, MAFIA MAN: As Erik sat on the ring apron was HE telling Pacquiao: I’M UR BITCH TOO?? I’ll never forget how he looked and nodded at his corner, letting them know that he wasn’t gonna get up nor continue fighting. Remember THAT?? huh?? Was he badly beaten up?? NO!! Bloodied?? NO!! Battered?? NO!! Yet he refused to continue fighting. Why??.Tell me MR. MEXICAN MAFIA, what was he telling Pacquiao?? “I’M UR BITCH?? If you remember well, Morales said that he was retiring and would fight again.

Now, with all respects to the future HOF’er and great El Terrible, I understood when HE SAID in the post fight interview that he had nothing to offer. And HE SAID that he had already realized that he wasn’t gonna win. HE SAID that continuing to fight was useless. And I respected him for it. I knew that it must’ve been hard on him. A WARRIOR of his caliber admitting defeat and deciding to go home with his health.

Anyway MAFIA MAN, your response might be interesting, probably not too enlightening, but interesting nonetheless. Peace to all!!

  4. EZE
what i meant was, how the fight ended, by cotto taking a knee and telling margarito i am ur B. Oh and the famous blood spot he put on the camera lens in the last round. Not counting the puerto rican radio station crying foul and saying margarito used steroids.
You r right seems like people remember him by his bloody face in that 2008 battle. But i remember his face bloody in the clottey, pacquiao and mayorga fight or even worse than in the margarito fight.
Point taken Marg hasnt been the same but i take that mostly because he lost his long time trainer (not the pads) but in the fighting conditioning he kept margarito. Did u remember cintron? p.will? He hasnt thrown the same amount of punches since and no plaster does that.

  5. MEXICANMAFIA In reference to your “We all know what happened after” comment. AFTER?? hmmmm…. Are you referring to Margarito got caught cheating AFTER?? Just wanted to make sure I didn’t misunderstand your comment. Anyway, it was a great fight. NEITHER fighter has been the same since. Many fans and non fans only remember Cotto’s bloodied features but the truth is that Margarito is not the fighter he used to be AFTER that memorable July 2008 battle. Was it the punishment he also received?? or….. whatever.. Peace!

  6. I hope margarito taps that ass the same as the first time!
Let the trash talk begin!!!! the same as the first time!!!! Lol!!
We all know what happend after.

  7. Before you spend time writing an article about allegations of JMM cheating, what I am assuming is about the stepping on Pacman’s feet, watch these two videos. Southpaw versus Conventional, it is bound to happen….

  8. thanks buddy, we try to stand out from the rest and having a nice site helps.

$300 Nice!! I will be posting an article very soon about JMM cheating… yes another controversial article lol.

Sergio martinez is one of my fav.

  9. I know you predicted a Manny KO. I did not agree. Deep down I wanted Manny to win (to avoid having even more issues to make a May vs Manny fight possible) but I was outraged at all the “experts” predicting an easy KO for pacman. They kept saying how manny is now a two handed fighter bigger faster. I did not see the “bigger part” at all as both guys are very small guys. I also remembered the exact samething being said for their second fight. Oh now manny is a two handed fighter he will win easy. However, all the expert articles I read did make me have doubts in my own prediction of the battle going the distance. I almost wanted to agree with them but I didn’t and I made myself 300$ for sticking with my choice that Marquez would go the distance. I did not bet on who would win but I put money for Marquez going the distance!! Yay for me lol

By the way nice site you have going on here for boxing fans. Keep it up!! Good work.

For the Cotto vs Margarito fight, I do not have a favorite either but expect great entertainment. I would like for Margarito to win so that he may give Sergio Martinez a rematch. Cotto is not likely to fight Sergio.

  10. I am Mexican, but that has noting to do with my opinion. I was actually going for Pacquiao just in case you didnt know.

Well at least we both can agree, we can wait for this fight to happen lol.

  11. It seems we are not discussing the same thing here. I do not mind violent bloody battles. A fight should not be stopped just because a fighter is losing every round. We are talking about fights such as the Margarito vs Pacman fight. That was sad. I had enough by round ten for sure. 11 & 12 were sad and pathetic. We are talking about fights in which the other fighter is clearly defeated badly beaten already, has taken lots of punishment that even the thought of the badly beaten fighter landing a miracle ko punch is not there any longer. You are trying to make as it the opposite view of yours is being a wimp not wanting bloody hard fought battles. No, not at all. We boxing fans LOVE such battles. We are talking about battles such as Cotto vs Margarito (Example of a good stoppage, why allow cotto to continue? He had zero shot by then at winning, he was done) Margarito vs Pacman (Example of allowing the fight to go on for 1 or 2 rounds longer than it should have been) or Cotto vs Pacman (Stopped a round too late, he was done by round 11 and if he was allowed to come out for round 12, wft at that point dont stop it mid round, let him finish it on his feet) Even the recent battle of Angulo vs Kirkland was stopped a round too late likely. But then again maybe not that is not a good example even thou Angulo was doing nothing but taking a beating.

Anyways, I am looking forward to this cotto vs margarito fight. I am not a fan of either fighter but man are they likely to put on a great show if the first fight is any indication!

And having read some more of your articles I realize there is good chances you are mexican. The bias shows lol. So we may never agree if you will forever side with your roots. I understand. It’s easier for me to be rational and nuetral not being Mex or Prican.

  12. As a boxing fan which fight did you like more…

Alvarado fight or Tim Brandley fight?

One would assume that the Alvarado fight should have been stopped considering 1. he was losing most of the rounds 2. he was bleeding allot but at the end he was able to win..

or Bradley fight which was beyond boring..

Remember your paying your hard earn money… for this fight… which fight did you enjoy the most?

As a boxing fan I want to get my monies worth..

I agree with your points… but boxing is a dangerous sport and it comes with all risk.. if your worried about your health go play tennis or something.

  13. Edgar, I do understand your point of view clearly. Yes boxing is to be brutal and we want to hear all the right things. It sounds awesome how Margarito is willing to die in the ring. It’s like wow what a brave man. However, try to look at Cotto’s response in context. They are discussing how tough of Margarito to continue fighting with a BROKEN ORBITAL CHEEK BONE. Cotto does not believe it was tough but stupid. Cotto believes that was unecessary as do most people who watched the fight. The fight should’ve actually needed to be stopped by round ten. Round 11 and 12 were painful to watch as Pacman showed Margarito the mercy his “brave tough macho mexican corner” did not show their own fighter. Do you know that is considered a “miracle” that Margarito is able to fight again after taking such brutal beating which almost costed him his eye? Now we do not know exactly if he margarito would have been in the same situation had the fight been “properly” stopped by round ten, mid round 11 the latest, but we can safely assumed that it only made it much worse for him. Admitting defeat is no coward thing to do IF you fought your heart out. Nobody would think any less of Margarito had he quit or had his corner stopped the fight in the Tenth. Would you think any less of him? That’s what Cotto says, it’s dumb knowing fully well that you are done and are badly hurt and fighting on if you can call fighting on the fact of being pummeled even more, is that being tough and brave or a lack of common sense? Remember when Tito got stopped by Bernard? He had not taken as much punishment as Margarito and nobody acused Tito of quitting or of not having heart. NO it was thought of as a good stoppage by his corner to preserve the fighter to hopefully fight another day. There is always the possibility of a rematch if you lose but leave with your health in OK shape. No rematch if you get overly beaten for no reason. I hope you are able to see the more rational point of view as well.

I do like the tact of Puerto Rican corners in knowing when enough is enough. Even the great Joe Smokin Frazier quit after round 14. He did not quit, his corner just knew better than to send a blind man into harm’s way. A mexican corner would’ve allowed a blinded man to go on and keep taking a beating. Please explain what is to be appreciated in that?

  14. The first fight between Cotto-Margarito, Cotto took a lot of punishment and took a knee, which he did show heart and I respect him for taking the knee knowing he couldn’t go on anymore.

My whole issue is what he said during the face off. You don’t say that when your trying to sell a pay per view fight.

Everyone who left a comment brought up GREAT points and this is going to be a great fight.

  15. This article is pretty disturbing. Nobody can question Cotto’s heart. The man took all he could from Margarito. A real man knows when the fight is over and being rational and knowing when enough is enough is the TOUGHER choice. Most are unable to be rational and end up knocked out cold. I would have not gotten any more entertainment value out of their first fight had cotto’s corner not thrown in the towel when it was obvious cotto was done. Cotto would have taken a bit more punishment and the referee would’ve stopped the fight either way. That could’ve only caused more damage to an exciting fighter. Btw I am neither mexican nor Puerto Rican. This is a neutral opinion. I do see a foundamental difference in puerto rican vs mexican fighters. Mexicans expect their fighter to die in the right. Pr’s do not expect a great showing and no quitting from their boxers but they do not expect the pr boxer to die in the ring. Quite frankly that is very backwards mentality. It shows the level of education between the two countries. Mexico has a higher level of uneducated more rural people than Pr. Again, I am not from either country and I am not a mexico hater as many of my favorite boxers are mexian, De la hoya and Erik Morales. But it does seem to show mexican expectations of a fighter as more backwards barbarian less educated. Pr boxers make more intelligent long term decisions. What do you all think?

  16. Respectfully but wrong, wrong, wrong. I purchase tickets a couple times a year to see a major fight, Pac v Mosley being the last, Cotto v That other guy being the next. As a die hard, and I mean DIE HARD fan, the LAST thing I want to see is someone die in the ring for my entertainment. This isn’t gladiator times, this is a sport. It’s just a sport. A sport I love, mind you. A sport I watch every single day in some form or fashion. But again, just a sport and a sport I have no desire to see someone die in the midst of. The point you missed is that he’s telling That Other Guy that he’s full of it and taking the kind of beating from Manny that could’ve very well ended his career was stupid. How cool would it have been if That Other Guy’s eye injury was such that he couldn’t fight anymore and couldn’t support his family. Not very, especially for his family. (Although, I am of the opinion that if he never boxed again, justice would be done.) THAT was his point. As for comparing That Other Guy with Manny Pacquiao in terms of damage he does to opponents. Please. You are comparing apples to oranges. Your face looks like hell after Manny, that’s a given, that makes sense. After That Other Guy? It just doesn’t happen and definitely not to guys like Cotto who don’t historically get knocked down (Cotto has been down only 3 times in his career) or cut (he’s only been cut 5 times, 2 or 3 were from head butts.) I got his meaning, unfortunately, I think you missed it. Any fan who wants or expects a boxer to get injured or risk their life in the ring misses the true meaning of the sport. One more thing, it bothers the HELL out of me that ANYONE could overlook the fact that That Other Guy WAS in fact caught cheating. He blamed a man who was like a father to him and left him behind in the dirt while moving on in a career that he frankly doesn’t deserve. To add insult to injury, he acts appalled that anyone would bring it up. He cheated. Straight up. All this excusing and blaming just makes me hate him more. A warrior? Not in my book at all. A coward, more likely so, whether he says he’s willing to die in the ring or that the old man made him do it. Coward.

  17. As for the “Face Off” program, I believe that Cotto was either trying to get under Margo’s skin or trying to sell PPV tickets … OR BOTH??

  18. Well… I can relate somewhat to Cotto. I’ve been around the game since childhood, my father and uncle are ex-fighters that trained and managed fighters throughout my youth and teens. I’ve seen alot of brave fighters, champs, contenders and little regarded club fighters which I admired that aren’t doing too good these days, suffering of poor health, brain damage, dementia, liver and kidney other problems related to their ring days. Unfortunately there are many more on the way. I see them at fight cards I attend. Some I trained along side of and sparred with for years now barely recognize me. For others the ‘symptoms’ are beginning to show. A year from now a few won’t even remember me anymore as well. My beloved uncle ‘forgot’ who I was and so did my cousin, a 2 time New York Golden Gloves champ who later fought close to 40 pro fights. It’s the sad part of the game that many fans overlook. Most of the fans these brave men once entertained won’t lift a finger to help them get into their seat. Some even make fun of these warriors. There’s this one ex world title challenger that I once fought when we were amateurs that I visit from time to time. He’s not doing too well either. He didn’t make much in his day and his managers practically made more than he did. He lives alone in a clean but old house he bought and later inherited from his mom. He purchased the house from his uncle, her brother, over 30 years ago. On a few un-announced visits I found him hitting an worn and decaying heavy bag he had hanging from a tree in his back yard. He seemed to come to life as he let loose combos and ‘danced’ around. Last year I bought him a new one with my income tax return check. Lately the ‘symptoms’ have been accelerating. He shuffles as he walks, his speech slurred. I can notice how his mind seems to wander off and how he closes his eyes to concentrate.

And as for Cotto, well no, Victor Ortiz didn’t take any punishment compared to Cotto. Did Cotto ‘cowardly’ take a knee in his punishing brawl with Margarito in July of 2008?? hmmmm… Well, what was he to do? He knew he was beaten up pretty bad already, could barely breathe from his busted nose, his ear dripping blood, weakened by the PUNISHMENT he had already ABSORBED!! He knew that he NO LONGER had the strength to keep the oncoming Margarito off him. Was he supposed to continue to be battered until TOTAL HELPLESSNESS or until he was knocked into COMPLETE HEALTH THREATENING UNCONSCIOUSNESS?? Is THAT what he’s paid for?? Didn’t he prove enough? Was he supposed to risk it ALL? For WHO?? The fans??? hmmmm.. Do you know how many “fans” care about my friend, my cousin or my long deceased uncle?? Do you what to know how many visitors my friend or the legendary Wilfredo Benitez get?? I’ll tell you, practically NONE!! No love offerings, handouts, card shows.. NOTHING! Tony Margarito is one tough S.O.B., no doubt about it. He has a different outlook on his profession. To him it’s a win or DIE trying at all cost. That’s him. Fortunately Manny Pacquiao was merciful enough to hold back from the tenth round on or Tony might not be fighting on December 3rd nor ANY OTHER DAY!! We all UNDENIABLY saw how Pac looked to the ref on a couple of occasions, hoping he’d intervene. On the other hand Cotto expresses that’s fighting is his job, putting in a good days work and go home to his family. Twenty five or thirty years from now he might be glad he took his knee while enjoying his health, wealth and family. Tony?? Hopefully he will also do the same and not end up with the “symptom” that now haunt my ex-adversary friend, my ‘do or die’ cousin or Benitez or Bobby Chacon, Denny Moyer, Greg McClellan….. and many, many more of the fighters that entertained and thrilled us and we’ve somehow FORGOTTEN about.

Before I end this comment allow me to say that a few years ago I once asked my cousin what would he prefer, his ‘do or die’ fame or his health? He answered,”I would still be a fighter BUT I would’ve taken better care of my marbles. What good are thirty year old cheers and scrapbooks if you aint got the marbles to remember them??” These days my cousin doesn’t remember ever saying those words nor much of anything else, sometimes he doesn’t even remember me. Peace to all!!

  19. I’ve always said that hype is good for boxing. That in itself sells the fight. I think he pushed the right buttons. Even if Margarito wins again, it will not erase the hand wrap issue. That is just a monkey on his back that he will never get off.

  20. I got to say you got it all wrong Edgar. Cotto took alot of punishment in that Margarito fight and he fought with all the heart you could rightly ask of a man. He’s right it would be stupid for him to get himself killed in the ring so everyone can be entertained. Like Cotto said whos going to take care of his kids if something happens to him? the fans? You? To suggest that money could replace a father and husband is pretty shallow. We all have reason to suspect Margarito of loading his gloves in his fight with Cotto picture or no picture and rightly so. Edgar I think your misunderstanding what Cotto is saying about the fans and you have to admit he has reason to question (broken, torn) tape and gauze. We will never know if Margarito cheated or not and the outcome of this fight wont prove anything so we all might as well get over it. We’re going to see a great fight and then we’ll all see who wins then. Cant wait for this fight. Go Cotto!

  21. Can’t wait to see this fight. This fight can not determine or tell if Margarito did use anything in his gloves. There is no way to prove that since it was not caught that night. Yes Cotto was winning the 7 round hands down and the pace of the fight did sing to Margarito’s favor after the round. Who’s to say he did or didn’t?

December 3rd will be a different story. Both fighters hands will be check and there will be no excuses at the end of the fight. Cotto will win this fight and there will be a third fight next year.

  22. @Deez Cotto got hit by Margarito, It was never testified Margarito had loaded gloves that night..

The fight with Mosley, Margarito looked like crap.

Cotto shouldn’t have brought the whole hand wrap issue, playing he said she said game.

I agree Cotto hasn’t duck anyone I like that about him.. we don’t need to hear about him not willing to die in the ring or that his not doing it for the fans or the people..

If it wants for us the fans he wouldn’t be where he is today.

This is boxing and obviously there’s risk. You can die from fighting a bum. You just don’t say that.. imagine if every fighter said that…

Like I have said before If Margarito knew about his hand wrap then he should be banned, but obviously his still fighting so.. Hopefully Dec 3 will have some answers.

And if Margarito beats the crap out of cotto again don’t be saying he cheated just give credit where credit is due.

  23. I don’t believe Cotto made himself look like anything, other than a man whom wanted a direct answer, for a photo that showed suspicious tearing on a wrap. Margaritio could not answer that and instead, chose to assume the ignorant role, that was draped in machismo. Cotto was honest and sincere and laughed, because Margarito’s statement about dying, is one a 14 year old gangbanger would say about his neighborhood. It’s inane and doesn’t prove anything about his fighting skills. Cotto has heart, as stated by a previous post. Anything that was said or transpired by Cotto does not negate the amount of heart he has shown.

  24. This writer is so damn ignorant. Because a man won’t die in the ring doesn’t mean he’s going to give up when shit gets tough. Hit got hit with bricks for 12 rounds…u saw how he fought Mosley and u saw what Mosley did to Margacheato. Cotto has fought everyone ducked no one and you call to question his heart. Never ever write another article on boxing you dont know shit

  25. Margarito should be banned from boxing. I don’t know what interview you watched that mentioned anything about Margarito putting plaster on his face. Is something like that even possible without detection?

  26. Miguel is a humble and more importantly, a truthful man. He could have very easily sought the easy way out in answering the question by giving the generic response that most rabid aficionados want to hear. Instead he was genuine and honest. I find no fault in that. In fact it makes me respect him even more. I have nothing but contempt for Margarito. He is a poor excuse for a professional. I do believe he knew about his wraps, and I also think that the Mosley fight was not the FIRST fight in which he used his special handwraps. Karma has a way of making things right. I firmly believe that on December 3, our suspicions will be confirmed for those of us who believe Margarito used doctored wraps in the first fight with Cotto.

  27. I think what Cotto was trying to say was that Margarito was losing every round against Pacquiao. His corner shouldve stop that contest! He could’ve ended his career that night. I also think Margarito used something in his gloves. As we saw from his fight with Sugar Shane and Pacman, without the plaster, he’s just a slow punching bag that’s very hittable! This will be a good fight!
