Catching Up With the “Pride of Pomona”
“Sugar” Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KOs) holds the distinction of facing both Mayweather and Pacquiao in the ring.
His last bout was with Manny Pacquiao in May 2011 and he also squared off against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2010. While he didn’t come out with his hand raised in either of those battles, the popular SoCal warrior has had victories over Antonio Margarito, Ricardo Mayorga, Fernando Vargas, Oscar De La Hoya and many more.
I caught up with the multiple world champ at the “Pomona Pride Community Event” held this past weekend. This first-ever event benefited the Diamond’s Love Foundation that he sponsors. With his sister, Cerena Mosley-Prude, and the nonprofit organization, the Mosleys hosted a three-day festival with live entertainment, a carnival, health fair and more–culminating in a big amateur boxing show on Sunday that drew clubs from all over the area.
Shane has three generations of the sweet science in his family: trainer/father Jack Mosley and Shane Mosley Jr., 21. “Sugar” Shane, a top former amateur champ himself, shared his excitement and enthusiasm over seeing the amateur matchups come to fruition especially since his new Pomona Boxing Club has been thriving. Later in the day young Shane Jr. won his rematch bout, carrying on the family trade.
But before the matches got underway, I got a chance to ask Shane what everyone wants to know: What’s going on with Mayweather and Pacquiao?
While this drama plays out, some fans are sick and tired of hearing all the squabbling between the two camps while others are clamoring for the superstars to finally collide as the world waits for a decision.
In our exclusive chat, I got to hear Mosley’s thoughts on this issue, who he would want to fight next himself, and his shout out to his model girlfriend, Bella Gonzalez.
First, he addressed the Mayweather–Pacquiao D-R-A-M-A.
“It’s crazy; there’s a lot of money thrown around–I know from firsthand!” Shane told me. “Hopefully they can make something happen–I don’t know what’s gonna happen though…”

I also questioned the slugger about his own future plans. A couple of months ago, he had previously said at a charity function we were at, “I still have a few fights left in me; I wanna go out like I know I can.”
The gladiator has earned several championship straps, was voted World Boxing Hall of Fame’s 2000 “Fighter of the Year,” and has garnered various accolades and awards through the years since first turning pro in 1993. He’s now the prized pupil of Brother Nazim Richardson and, arguably, will be a future Hall of Fame first-ballot contender. At age 40, Mosley has fought at lightweight, welterweight, junior middleweight.
His bout against Pacman was at a catchweight of 145.
Was his May 2011 match his last time inside the squared circle? Mosley says he’s currently mulling over his options.
And Shane mentions two names that have been discussed as future opponents, should he lace up again.
The first is Canelo Alvarez, the likable carrot-topped Mexican sensation.
The second is Amir Khan, the British boxer trained by Freddie Roach.

Only time will tell if these marquee matchups will ever play out, including the Mayweather–Pacquiao “dream fight.”

Mosley was a great fighter.., but he’s done, just retire already…..
