James Kirkland was awarded a 10th-round disqualification victory when Molina’s corner entered the ring after the bell rang to end the round. However, Kirkland had dropped Molina just as the bell rang and officially the round was not over as referee Jon Schorle was giving Molina, who did not appear hurt, a count.

Molina beat the count, but after a few moments of confusion, Schorle waived his arms and disqualified Molina in a fight he was easily winning on the Erik Morales-Danny Garcia undercard.
Molina was ahead 88-83 on judge Dave Moretti’s scorecard and 87-84 on David Sutherland’s. Gale Van Hoy, who has authored some highly controversial scorecards, submitted another one as he had Kirkland shockingly ahead 86-85.

“I take nothing away from Carlos Molina,” Kirkland said. “He came to fight and he trained super-hard. As far as the stoppage, I’d prefer to keep going. I’d like to see what would’ve happened in the later rounds.”

Anne Wolfe, Kirkland’s trainer, wanted to see what Kirkland could have done in the final two rounds.

“I wanted see rounds 11 and 12,” she said. “I would have rather seen it go 12 rounds. I feel like Carlos was holding a lot and he was up a little bit, but James dropped him and was coming on. What would’ve happened in 11 and 12? I would’ve liked to see.”

  1. @Kasper
The only thing i heard wolf said was, ” Whats going on? You are the motha fucking Gorilla not him”, once the round started kirkland came out strong.

  2. Good fight, bad ending. Molina fought well but all the holding was terrible. I understand a little holding here & there to releave a little pressure or to interrupt a combo once and a while, but what this kid was doing was way too much holding. The ref should have said something about the exssessive holding. The ref also should not have stopped this fight, it was almost over anyway. What is it with these refs and judges? If they are trained why do they suck so bad?

  3. Gale Van Hoy should give Carlos Molina some of the money he was paid to score rounds for Kirkland. 86-85? What fight was he watching? Come back soon Carlos.

  4. I am not sure if I would call Molina’s performance great. That is an overstatement at best. Kirkland seemed confused and slow until Anne Wolfe whispered in his ear (in the 10th) “You act like that motherfucka got yo kids”….couldn’t decipher the rest. After that, Kirkland came out like we remember he did in the his fight. Molina’s performance, to me, was marred with holding and head butts. He would punch then hold (just like Alexander does). It is that smart? Or is that cheating? I would love to see a rematch, but it doesn’t look like that will happen anytime soon. Kirkland’s camp has their eye on someone else I guess. The disqualification was upsetting. The ref should have called it when it happened if that was the case. Not until after he counted. I do not understand why boxing rules are so black and white. There should be back up refs or a committee who can overturn a ref’s call or something…

  5. Very terrible finish to a great performance by Molina, I hope he gets an immediate rematch with Kirkland. It saddens me that a guy like Molina constantly gets the shit end of the stick when he proves himself over and over again. I’m just glad he has every intention of keeping his head up and continuing his career despite constant heartache from being robbed. Molina is a beast who despite his record is much more than a journeyman I just hope even in defeat people enjoy watching him fight as much as I do. He’s a warrior who deserves nothing but respect from fans, he’s certainly earned all my respect. Keep your head up Molina your day will come.
