Brandon Rios won a controversial split-decision over Richard Abril on Saturday night from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Rios couldn’t knock out Abril as promised even with an extra weight advantage.

For the second time in a row, Brandon Rios failed to make the 135-pound limit. While Abril was 135 pounds, Rios weighed 137 pounds. The Nevada State Athletic Commission fined Rios $45,000 from his $450,000 purse and Rios also paid an undisclosed amount to Abril to accept the fight.

The fight was a bit boring as fans expected fireworks from Rios, Abril clearly out boxed Rios and used his height and reach to his advantage. Rios clearly showed he can’t box, he wasn’t throwing any jabs or many combinations, he was just looking for the one punch KO that never came.

Brandon Rios talked a lot of crap saying how he was going to knock Abril out, well he didn’t. He also kept telling the media that he hired a nutritionist and how he had no problems making weight, well he didn’t make weight. Rios’ attitude is only pushing fans away. Maybe that explains why only 3,705 fans attended his fight.

Another disappointment is how Rios can’t talk like a professional athlete. Every other word that comes out of his mouth is F this, F that…his worse that Joe Pesci in the movie Goodfellas.

After the fight, Rios was being interview by the media and he continued to bash on his fans and the media,”there are all these critics out there talking shi*t about me, saying stuff about me, more than half of these motherf*ckers are fat and they don’t even lose weight for their health.”

First off, the fans and the media are not professional athletes or being paid to fight and to make weight. Second, before he calls anyone fat, he’s the one who couldn’t make weight not once but twice. Aside from him not making weight, his attitude in my personal opinion, is pushing fans away.

In his defense, it is not his fault how the judges score the fight. Both Jerry Roth scored the fight 116-112 and Glenn Trowbridge 115-113 for Rios. Adalaide Byrd scored it 117-111 for Abril. It would have been nice for Rios to give credit to Abril and acknowledge he was the better man that night.

What’s next for Rios?

Rios is moving up to 140 pounds and the plans were to get a shot at Juan Manuel Marquez this summer at Cowboys Stadium. Marquez who also fought on the same card won a unanimous decision over Sergey Fedchenko (30-2, 13 KOs) to claim the vacant interim WBO Jr welterweight title in front of 22,492 fans at the New Arena Mexico in Mexico City.

After Rios performance and weight issues, I don’t think he will have a shot at Marquez or even stand a chance. I will rather see Mike Alvarado vs Juan Manuel Marquez.

What is your opinion, do you think Brandon Rios won a fair fight against Abril?

  1. Although Rios wasn’t at his best, he did enough to win the fight, barely. The fact that Abril was holding is irrelevant.

  2. I knew I shoulnt have paid for this shit, it was not ppv worthy, but I love boxing and had to get it.. I wish I could get a refund

  3. Pretty effective holding i’d say. Rios had nothing but two judges in his pocket. Complete joke.

  4. Abril was holding constantly but he dominated this fight, I was going for Rios by K.O. and gave Abril no shot of winning this fight. He proved me wrong even though those lousy scorecards said otherwise. Rios should have just moved up instead of trying to make weight that he just can’t do anymore.
