It was recently announced that Blue Wave Boxing signed former world champion Jose Luis Castillo for a two-year contract and will be fighting at the welterweight limit. I hate talking crap on Jose Luis Castillo because at one point, I was a huge fan of his but that all changed when he failed to make weight not once, not twice but numerous of times. He missed weight for his second and third fight with Diego Corrales. 2 out of 3 is ridiculous.

For me, that’s disrespectful to the sport. I could understand if it happens once but when it’s almost every other fight, it’s a joke. I don’t know if promoters are desperate for fighters or what.

Recently Castillo did it again. He was suppose to fight Jose Cotto, the older brother of Miguel Cotto, on the under card of Erik Morales vs Danny Garcia but the fight was cancelled when Castillo failed to make weight again.

The long-faded Castillo (63-11-1, 54 KOs) made no effort to shed the extra weight, and Cotto, already coming up in weight from a smaller division, declined to allow Castillo the weight advantage so the fight was cancelled.

Castillo also blew the 140-pound limit for a title eliminator against Timothy Bradley Jr., and that fight was also cancelled. Apparently his new promoters don’t know what they got themselves into.

  1. I am a fan a Castillo’s but I think he needs to retire. It’s not like he’ll get a world title shot anytime soon regardless of whom he beats.

  2. Really can’t believe he’s still fighting. Corrales-Castillo is the second greatest fight ever. But man, that was a long time ago. I think it’s safe to say that he won’t be fighting for titles any time soon. He’s pissed off too many people with his BS. Wish him luck though, he provided a lot of thrillers.

  3. I was a big fan of Castillo, when he actually dedicated himself he was one of the best fighters. However he decided to take this route and I’ve lost all respect for him, I don’t care to watch him fight so I agree with Gabreal he does not deserve any big fight or to even be mentioned in title contention.

  4. he is one fighter that does not deserve big fights or actual airtime on TV, he has every right to make a living but he does not deserve to be on tv or a shot at any major or minor belt.
