The plan was for Antonio DeMarco to win his tune up fight which he did successfully with a spectacular knockout of “Mickey” Roman last month in his home town of Los Mochis, Mexico, and for Jorge Linares to win against Sergio Thompson this past weekend so a rematch between WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (27-2-1, 20KOs) and Venezuela’s Jorge Linares (31-2, 20KOs) could take place on Saturday, July 7th, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

That plan went down the drain with a blink of an eye. In a major upset, Sergio Thompson scored a second round TKO over Linares in a WBC lightweight title eliminator on Saturday night at the Grand Oasis Arena in Cancun, Mexico.

Thompson landed several power punches which led to Linares to go down in round 2. The bout was waived off due to a cut over Linares’ left eye. Time was 2:27.

Sergio Thompson might now face Antonio DeMarco.

  1. It was a bit of a shocker but Linares has more to worry about than getting back in the ring with DeMarco, he seems to cut rather easily it’s not a major issue (but it is something he must worry about) but if he can’t better his defense than he will have more trouble with cuts when he gets into wars against tough fighters such as DeMarco. I would go DeMarco to dispatch Thompson rather easily if he gets the fight.
