WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was to make his third title defense against Irish Andy Lee at the Sun Bowl stadium in Texas on June 16, 2012. That was until the University of Texas system ordered the fight to be moved elsewhere.
The request was made after security concerns were cited because of fears of border violence. You might be thinking what does this have to do with Julio Cesar Chavez? Well, Chavez Jr. is currently dating Frida Munoz Roman.
Frida Munoz Roman has a baby girl with Sinaloa drug cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s deceased son who was killed in 2008. Guzman is one of the most wanted men in the world and was just indicted by a federal grand jury in El Paso on Tuesday — the same day the fight was canceled. The U.S. government has offered a $5 million award for information leading to the capture of Guzman.
The Sinaloa cartel has been in a bloody turf war with the Juarez drug cartel and rumor is the cancellation was allegedly based on the relationship between Chavez Jr and Frida Munoz Roman.
