As I mentioned earlier, “Canelo” Alvarez will now face Paul Williams on Mexican Independence Day weekend, Sept 15. In another turning event, Erik Morales was planning to get a rematch with the young Danny Garcia. The contract for their first match up in March, where Danny Garcia won by unanimous decision taking the WBC light welterweight title from “El Terrible”, has turn south regardless of the rematch clause.

Why Morales is considering to fighting again after being outboxed by a 24 year-old and being stripped from his belt for not making weight is beyond me. Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer, who promotes Khan and Garcia, told ESPN.com that Amir Kahn will now face Danny Garcia on July 14 on HBO.

The search for a new opponent for Khan was on after Lamont Peterson tested positive for a banned substance and their May 19 fight was canceled. Word is that Garcia suffered a rib injury and a broken nose during his fight with Morales and hasn’t fully recovered.

Juan Manuel Marquez who was scheduled to fight on July 14 at Cowboys Stadium threw a tantrum about taking a pay cut to fight Mercito Gesta in Texas so his fight has been officially scrapped.

Bob Arum said Mercito Gesta has no name value in the States and couldn’t pay what Marquez was demanding. Marquez plans to return to Mexico again.

Antonio Margarito was scheduled to return this Saturday night in Tucson but suffered a foot injury earlier this month and word is his trying to get a fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in the fall.

According to Brandon Rios manager, Cameron Dunkin, Rios might appear on HBO at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on July 7, most likely to face Mauricio Herrera (18-2, 7 KOs), 31, who is coming off a competitive 10-round decision loss to Mike Alvarado in an all-action slugfest that is a fight of the year candidate.

  1. Can they not just make a Marquez vs Morales fight in Mexico. Surely that would sell a ton of tickets? Both are looking for fights and Morales might actually be motivated enough to have a decent training camp and loose that flab around his mid-section. One last great fight from two great warriors.
