The Aftermath: Mayweather-Cotto

I am a bit disappointed with Miguel Cotto not giving Larry Merchant a post fight interview Saturday night after losing a unanimous decision to Floyd Mayweather. Cotto declined interviews after the fight and also didn’t speak to reporters upon his return to Puerto Rico.

He did tweet, “just resting in my SkyLoft with my family. Nothing to be down about. I respect the judges dec. but I completely disagree.”

I will say it was a competitive fight but I have to agree with the judges scores. Scores were 117-111, 117-111 and 118-110. Punch stats showed Mayweather landing 179 of 687 punches to 105 of 506 from Cotto. Cotto had Mayweather on the ropes the entire night and could have used that to his advantage but didn’t.

I was very impressed with Mayweather’s performance. He actually fought and didn’t hold as much. I will give credit to Cotto for making Mayweather bleed from his nose in the early rounds, that’s something I never seen. Cotto was never down though he seemed hurt several times during the fight, particularly in the 12th round but over all, he fought well.

Floyd Mayweather was guaranteed $32 million for the scheduled 12 rounds plus a percentage of the pay-per-view buys. That’s equal to $1.6 million dollars per minute. Floyd’s payday is an all-time record, surpassing the $30 million that Mike Tyson was guaranteed for his second fight against Evander Holyfield in 1997. Yes, that was the infamous ear-bite. Cotto, who fell to 37-3, was guaranteed his biggest purse ever, $8 million plus PPV. That’s how much Pacquiao makes.

Mayweather made a clear point during the post fight after every media outlet kept asking about Manny Pacquiao.

“I’m tired of the media and the people being fooled,” Mayweather stated. “The truth is that Bob Arum is not going to let the fight happen. It’s not on me. I offered him $40 million. I told him I’d wire him $20 million in 48hrs. He wanted 50% of the earnings. But he doesn’t earn record breaking numbers to deserve that. He doesn’t know what he wants. The public is being fooled. Once he is free from Bob Arum the fight will happen because Arum doesn’t care about the fighter making money. This sport is grueling and I want Pacquiao to make money.”

So, what is next for Floyd Mayweather? For now Mayweather will count his millions behind bars as his scheduled to turn himself in on June 6 for a 90 day sentence after he plead guilty for a domestic violence charge involving his former girlfriend and children.

This is my prediction, Floyd Mayweather will be released from jail due to a federal mandate to ease overpopulated jails and will be serving only a fraction of his sentence.

Remember I told you so.

  1. for the record I had BOTH fights scored SAME on my unofficial card & I luv Mosley & Cotto:
    118-110 Canelo over Mosley
    118-110 Mayweather over Cotto
    respectfully – David Martinez

  2. Kerry, I would agree with the challenger/champion idea, Mayweather is recognized P4P so even though he may not have a belt, Mayweather is regarded as the best out there belt or no belt. Even if the judges were leaning for the individual with the belt, it would still be hard to give Cotto more than 5 rounds.

  3. Well 116-112 (8-4 in rounds won) for Mayweather seemed about fair. In a couple of close rounds Floyd outlanded Cotto but Miguel, being the champ, was also the more agressive fighter of the two.
Yeah, I’d say that 116-112 seems fair. Good fight, better than what many expected. Rematch?? No, it won’t happen BUT.. if it were to take place I’d say that Cotto CAN actually make a few adjustments and probably better his performance a tad. Floyd?? No, I DON’T think that Floyd can fight any better than he did last Saturday.

  4. Great fight, great night of fights. 118-110 seemed a little off the mark. Cotto was the champion, Floyd was the challenger. I thought Cotto should have been given a little more respect on the scorecards in some of the close rounds. But congrats to Floyd. Now if Manny can take care of his business, we can get back to nonstop mega-fight babble!!

  5. Cotto had nothing to be ashamed about, he fought a great fight and earned nothing but respect. He knows as does everyone else he did not win that fight. However he made Mayweather fight and bloodied him up, the better man just won. I can understand if the fight was a lot closer and could have gone either way but it wasn’t. Be proud Cotto you fought well!
