Golden Boy promoters Richard Schaefer
and Oscar De La Hoya
announced in a teleconference Tuesday that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will defend his title against former welterweight titlist Victor Ortiz on September 15 in the main event of a Showtime PPV
card dubbed “Knockout Kings” from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Victor Ortiz will fight Josesito Lopez on June 23 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles as a tune up fight. Ortiz, who would move up in weight, is the third opponent picked to face the 21-year-old Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KOs) after Paul Williams was paralyzed from the waist down in a motorcycle accident which ended his career.
James Kirkland also pulled out from fighting the Mexican super star due to his right shoulder but rumor was that Kirland turned down $800,000 offer because he wanted a $2.5 million purse.
Let’s just hope Ortiz doesn’t get hurt against Lopez or Canelo will be forced to look for a fourth opponent.
Jhonny Gonzalez (52-7, 45 KOs) will take on Mexican countryman Daniel Ponce De Leon (43-4, 35 KOs) for Gonzalez’s featherweight title as part of the Showtime’s pay-per-view telecast.
