Golden Boy promoters Richard Schaefer and Oscar De La Hoya announced in a teleconference Tuesday that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will defend his title against former welterweight titlist Victor Ortiz on September 15 in the main event of a Showtime PPV card dubbed “Knockout Kings” from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Victor Ortiz will fight Josesito Lopez on June 23 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles as a tune up fight. Ortiz, who would move up in weight, is the third opponent picked to face the 21-year-old Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KOs) after Paul Williams was paralyzed from the waist down in a motorcycle accident which ended his career.

James Kirkland also pulled out from fighting the Mexican super star due to his right shoulder but rumor was that Kirland turned down $800,000 offer because he wanted a $2.5 million purse.

Let’s just hope Ortiz doesn’t get hurt against Lopez or Canelo will be forced to look for a fourth opponent.

Jhonny Gonzalez (52-7, 45 KOs) will take on Mexican countryman Daniel Ponce De Leon (43-4, 35 KOs) for Gonzalez’s featherweight title as part of the Showtime’s pay-per-view telecast.

  1. Again, this so called champion is yet to face a top jr middleweight. What about Erislandy Lara or Carlos Molina? those are true, tested 154 pounders. Ortiz is a joke, you can expect some crazy BS from this fight, definitely not PPV worthy.

  2. Here are the issues I have with this:
    1. How did a 147 pounder get a title shot at a 154 pound belt ? Victor is 1-1 as a welterweight.
    2. The WBC has said via their twitter account that this is a voluntary title defense for Alvarez. Why ?
    3. Canelo’s last mandatory defense was on 6/18/11. WBC Champs are required, by rule, to make 1 mandatory defense at least once a year.
    4. Are we to believe no worthy 154 pounders are available ??

For the record, I’m not hating on Ortiz. I think he’s a good fighter. I hope he brings his A-game on Sept 15.

  3. Main event and co-main event are great fights to make but I don’t think I’ll be paying for this PPV. I just hope things go according to plan this time.
