So long ago are the days of exciting heavyweight fights when Americans dominated the division. I remember the heavyweights of my generation replacing my father’s. It was Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield
, Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis, and even George Foreman. Although my generation may not have been as great as those that came before them, at least they were formidable and transcending.
I remember being in middle school and high school; I could not wait to watch Tyson vs. Holyfield, or one of my favorite fights back in the day, Holyfield vs. Bowe I. I remember playing Mike Tyson’s Punch Out all day as a kid just waiting for his fights to come on and my grandparents saying, “hito, come watch the fight!” Where is the next generation for our sons to be excited for? What!! They get Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko? What the *%$! is that!” It’s not fair I tell you.
I mean come on! You mean to tell me that with all the 200 plus pound athletes who wash out of football and other sports in America, that there is not one bad ass that can represent the heavyweight division with some swagger? I don’t get it.
All I hear these days from casual fans is, “are there any good heavyweight fighters anymore? That’s all I used to watch.” I then find myself defending boxing through the welterweight and middleweight divisions like I am selling a used Prius rather than a brand new sports car. If it’s not Mayweather or Pacquiao, people don’t know who the hell they are. It’s ridiculous. You’re welcome UFC or should I say, “will you lend us Junior Dos Santos since he appears to be able to box?” Wait, he is not even American. Well at least he lives in the western hemisphere. I will take even that right now.
Shoot, I would take an over the hill trilogy match between Tyson and Holyfield. Take a break from Broadway Mike, we need some excitement. Evander, put that barbeque sauce down and quit having kids. Step in the ring with Mike one more time, and lose one more piece of your ear rather than one of your mansions to foreclosure or divorce. I would ask for Lennox to come back as he could probably lick most of the current heavyweights today including the Klitschkos, but again he is not American.
That being said, I sure can’t wait for the heavyweight championship fight on November 10, 2012 between Wladimir Klitschko and Mariusz Wach. Klitschko will be defending the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO & The Ring Heavyweight titles. Unfortunately, nobody cares, at least in America. The fight is between a Polack and a Ukrainian for God’s sake! I mean, damn, we might be lucky to have one American heavyweight fighter crack the top ten these days. Sorry Chris Arreola, but I don’t see them making a video game called Arreola’s Punch Out. Your name is Arreola bro.
Well, I guess I will sell another Prius and purchase a copy of Klitschko’s Punch Out. I hear it’s big overseas. Sorry America, our heavyweights are gone. Maybe you can dust off the old Nintendo and Mike Tyson’s Punch Out because that is the best it’s going to get unless you go see Mike on Broadway. I hear it’s pretty good, for real, no really. Lol, heavyweights suck.
