At 8pm EST, Showtime
aired the inaugural boxing event at the brand-new Barclay’s center in Brooklyn NY. With high profile boxing names in the audience, a great event, as successful in action as anyone could have imagined began.
In a workman like fashion, Devon Alexander easily out pointed an unexciting Randall Bailey. In front of a disapproving crowd, Alexander picked at Bailey with a peppering jab and focused on throwing to the body. Bailey did have plenty of chances to land punches, but seemed to not be able to get his hands off at all.
Throughout the fight, Alexander walked through the few significant straight rights and right uppercuts that Bailey landed. It was not an exciting fight, filled with holding and a very sluggish looking Bailey.
This fight started with a long war of words between trainer Daryl Cunningham and Randall Bailey. In the past, Cunningham and Paulie Malignaggi have exchanged words. A win by Alexander and Malignaggi leads to a great future fight at the Barclay’s where fans have already been exposed to both fighters.
In an excellent middleweight title bout, Peter Quillin beat Hassan N’Dam Regardless of this outcome, both Peter Quillin and Hassan N’Dam gained tremendous amount of fans, recognition and respect across the boxing world. N’Dam suffered 3, 2 knockdown rounds which cost him the fight. Even though N’Dam was knocked down twice in two earlier rounds, his attack, and offense, and all out fighter mentality surely won the hearts of fans. Quillin looked phenomenal in the early rounds. He looked sharp landing picture perfect left hooks knocking down N’Dam several times. As the fight sped along, Quillin seemed to slowly show fatigue and lose some of his edge. It did not matter as his power and ability to catch N’Dam in exchanges allowed him to seal the deal with two final knockdowns in the final round. Up until that point, the fight was in the air. Peter Quillin did what was needed, showed some incredible power and skills and is a threat in the middleweight division. With this experience going 12 rounds allows him to grow and continue to become an all around force.
In a split decision and very difficult fight to score, Paulie Malignaggi squeaked out a victory in a non-title bout against Pablo Cesar Cano. Cano came out, survived a very nasty cut, and knocked down the champion. Although it was a loss, Cano made a statement for a very young fighter. Malignaggi had some great moments using his famous pestering jab and a quick right hand that followed. Cano caused lots of trouble for Malignaggi and arguably won the fight. It was a great showing for both and it will be interesting to see how each fighter mixes it up with other 147 pounders.
The anticipated main event led to a famed warriors (almost) career end. A beautiful left hook thrown by the junior welterweight king, Danny Garcia, knocked out Mexican great Erik Morales. With controversy leading up the fight, Garcia decided that regardless of Morales’ failed drug test, he would fight and earn a career high of $1,000,000. Garcia looked strong, powerful and greater speed than some of his previous fights. With two wins of Morales and a knockout of former champion Amir Khan, Garcia has earned his right to sit on top of the 140-pound mountain.
Winners and losers alike made a statement on Saturday’s card. Danny Garcia solidified his current dominance as an exciting junior welterweight champion. Paulie Malignaggi is almost always fun to watch, even if the excitement of him winning by knockout may not be there. Pablo Cesar Cano made a huge statement in his loss and is a great challenge for anyone at welterweight. Peter Quillin and Hassan N’Dam both showed great skills and heart in their battle and will be seen again. Finally, Devon Alexander made the least amount of noise by beating Bailey. Beating a game, prime welterweight will help
Alexander stir the excitement in the pot around him.
