As I watched my all time favorite fighter walk into the squared circle as a challenger Saturday night, I wasn’t nearly as excited to see him at all. As I knew it was time to pass on the torch. I knew he had no business fighting a young kid, the same kid who beat him 7 months earlier.

As predicted, Danny Garcia scored a fourth round KO against the future hall of famer and Mexican legend Erik Morales. 15 years ago Morales started out the same way Garcia did.

It was Sept 6, 1997, at the County Coliseum, El Paso, Texas. A young and hungry Morales with a perfect record of 26 wins and 20 KOs won the WBC super bantamweight championship against the veteran Daniel Zaragoza (55-7-3, 27KOs).

The 21-year-old Morales impressively beat the champion who had twice the experience, not because Zaragoza wasn’t prepared but because it was destined to happen. This Saturday night was no exception.
