After three and a half years out of the ring and foregoing many personal struggles, Ricky Hatton made his way back into the ring last night in Manchester, England against welterweight Vyacheslav Senchenko. Hatton had never lost in his career at Manchester Arena, which seemed the most appropriate venue for him to stage the comeback for his boxing career in the sold out Arena last night. To Hatton’s credit, he did not face a true tune-up fighter. Senchenko had only lost once in his career to Paulie Malignaggi earlier this year.

Although his heart appeared to return to the ring, the skill and ability did not follow him back. Hatton is one of the more beloved characters in boxing and I know myself and many others were pulling for him to have a successful comeback and perform well. He seemed to do well the first several rounds of the fight, but ultimately his body and stamina diminished as the fight went on before Senchenko dropped him in the ninth round with a perfectly placed shot to the liver. In a post-fight conference Hatton said, “The top and bottom of it is today I needed to find out whether I still have it, and I haven’t.” He further mentioned he wanted to be able to look himself in the mirror and know he gave it his best.

I would personally like to say that my hat is off and my heart goes out to Ricky Hatton. He did give it his best and he was honest with himself and his fans after he realized it just isn’t there anymore. I hope he has success as a trainer and a promoter in the future. Subsequently, I sincerely hope he continues to overcome some his battles with depression and substance abuse from the last few years. Keep your head up Hatton and thanks for the memories and entertainment. Cheers!

  2. Amazing Jarring was able to fight the way he did after such a long absence from the ring; however, its unfortunate his management didn’t slowly work him back to rebuild his confidence and to get rid of the rust. Of course Hatton wants to fight the best but come on…now Hatton might be done for good.
