Oscar De La Hoya v Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Floyd Mayweather is no stranger to the big stage and building up a prize fight. While shooting a commercial last week on Showtime for their May 4th fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mayweather and Robert Guerrero had some heated words for each other. Mayweather used his normal antics of talking trash and trying to intimidate the less experienced Guerrero. When referencing the fight with Guerrero standing face to face for the shoot, Mayweather told Guerrero to “step up to the table” and lashed repeatedly that Guerrero would be “easy work.”

No doubt Mayweather appears to be trying to get under Guerrero’s skin. That said, Robert Guerrero did seem to be a little out of place for the big stage and could not quite match the war of words with the more experienced trash talking Mayweather. Although he indicated Mayweather’s antics do not bother him, you have to wonder how Guerrero’s nerves are for the biggest fight of his life against the best fighter in the world.

“You can’t hit what you can’t see; I’ll give it to you toe to toe…however you want it,” said Mayweather to Guerrero. We will see if Mayweather really does fight Guerrero toe to toe, right in front of him just like Andre Berto did in Guerrero’s last fight in which he physically dominated Berto to a unanimous decision last November. Subsequently, and to his credit, Mayweather has shown the willingness to mix it up more in his recent fights, particularly against his last bout against Miguel Cotto for Cinco de Mayo weekend last year.

Nerves or not though, look for the interim WBC welterweight champion Guerrero to be ready to fight. If Mayweather does stay in front of him and fight toe to toe, it could be an interesting match that Floyd Mayweather should still win. However, if Floyd decides to move around and box and counter punch, then look for him to easily outpoint Guerrero to a unanimous decision. Either way, there is something about being in Vegas for a Cinco de Mayo fight weekend, especially when Mayweather is involved. Bottom line is he fills seats, and now that Golden Boy has added WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon against Abner Mares in a highly anticipated bout to the card, May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas becomes even more appealing.

If you can’t be there to watch it live, make sure to get it on PPV on Saturday May 4th at 9PM ET. It will be the first of a multi-fight contract for Mayweather on the Showtime network after leaving HBO.
