Prizefighter Debuts New Video

Boxer Alfonso Gomez is known for his prizefighting career. But these days, the Southern California warrior is also making a name for himself in the music world with the band Hy3rid. He and his younger brothers Robb and Jesus (“Zeuz”) just debuted a video for their new single “Si Se Puede” featuring Don Cheto. I caught up with the talented trio to hear all about their latest ventures.

On Saturday night, Team Hy3rid (pronounced hybrid) and the Gomez family hosted a special video release party to celebrate the culmination of hard work and dedication in making their message heard loud and clear. The band has built a large following for their catchy blend of rock, hip hop and Español. The brothers Gomez all sing and rap in this song showcasing famed Mexican entertainer and musician Don Cheto. Sporting T-shirts shouting “Si Se Puede” (Yes We Can), the band mates and siblings hope to get their message out loud and clear. The lively video was just released and is already a big hit on YouTube.

Here’s my exclusive chat with the boxer and the band.

Alfonso has taken a brief hiatus from the ring after his fight last summer versus Shawn Porter in July and Canelo Alvarez in September 2011. Gomez is known for his victories over Arturo Gatti, Jose Luis Castillo, among many others. For now, he’s focusing on music and also enjoying time with his wife and their two young children.

“I’m currently on rehab still but the improvements have been great,” Alfonso replies when I ask him about his future bouts. “We’re looking for a summer fight.”

His passion is also in the music biz–and reaching out to others.

“The music video “Si Se Puede” featuring Don Cheto is the culmination of months of work,” Alfonso tells me. “We are so proud of this video because not only does it speak our voice but also the sentiment of millions of Latinos in America. I don’t consider it a ‘protest song’ but rather an outcry to our governors to give us what it was promised.”

Youngest bro Jesus is also very proud of their efforts in completing this video for the spirited single with Don Cheto.

“It was an honor to direct the video and we loved working with Don Cheto,” Zeuz relays of his experience working with the music icon. “He’s a really down to earth person.”

Robb Gomez echoes this opinion.

“It was a dream come true to work with Don Cheto. We still feel like its a dream, but no, its real,” the singer says. “Don Cheto has been a great supporter of the H3 movement. First by collaborating on the song, and then on this music video. We have also performed on TV with Don Cheto on Estudio 2 and the song is now on the radio on “QUE BUENA” 96.1FM!”

During the weekend fiesta, their countless hours of working was celebrated with family and friends.

“The Release Party was very good. We had a lot of people show up; we had cake with the picture of SI SE PUEDE,” Robb adds. “The release was a big success and it gave us an extra boost during the release–within 24 hours the video got over 1,500 views and in the next two days its gone up to 12,000 views.”

As of today, it’s already reached 20,000 hits.

Alfonso, Robb and Zeuz continue on making more music, making strong statements in the community and making their mark in the boxing circles too.

“SI SE PUEDE is now sponsoring athletes too. We are currently sponsoring amateur fighter Isaias Guerrero (20-1),” the team says proudly. “Also we sponsored Alfonso Gomez vs, Shawn Porter, and we are also sponsoring Daniel Ponce de Leon Boxing Gym. The song has taken a different shape and transending into a simple of hard work, dedication, and focus!”
